This doesn't answer any questions, but it made me think of you guys. Yes, when I think of horrible little creatures that can kill you, I think of this place.Captain Schnemo wrote:You used to be to swim in the lakes at the resorts, but in Florida water there's a small amoeba that can get into your ear and kill you (in extremely rare cases). I assume it was always there, but then someone lawyered up and ruined it for everyone. It's possible that it's a new environmental phenomenon, I guess.
I can't help but think Uncle Walt would start some kind of anti-amoeba workshop or maybe offer a bounty for anyone who could kill off the species (or at least protect us from it). Swimming in all the lakes was so much fun.
Anyway, I hope to stick around for a while (I missed the whole wand removal drama, I see), but a vacation derailed me last time and I'm about to take another one. Maybe it won't take me months to recover from this one.

Welcome back. Hope to see you around again (post-vacation) - your commentary on things is always interesting to read. =)Captain Schnemo wrote:Anyway, I hope to stick around for a while (I missed the whole wand removal drama, I see), but a vacation derailed me last time and I'm about to take another one. More on topic - I remember the first visit where we couldn't swim in the water at the CBR anymore. Seemed to sort of defeat a lot of the purpose of '7 white sand beaches'. Lousy (but ecologically significant, I'm sure) amoeba.

Mom and I had gone to River Country because it was the only waterpark that didn't require guests to be in a full bathing suit. We were a bit modest (haha) and went with the t-shirt and shorts option that RC allowed back then.
But, since we're not really swimmers at all, it was a bit unnerving to be dumped out into lake-like water rather than a pool at the end of a slide!
But that was more because we're not swimmers rather than it being gross or anything.
I'm glad we'd had the chance to see it though.

Schnemo.. wow scary stuff.
Guess Disney figured it wasn't worth the risk, or the bad press, and lawsuits
Of course they could have converted it over.. but I guess that would have cost to much....sigh

yeah, too much to convert at one time, and they couldn;t see the eventual return of that capital in having a third water park option to aleviate the crowds at the other 2. yeat another short-sighted profit closure under the Eisner Regime...rdeacon wrote:Of course they could have converted it over.. but I guess that would have cost to much....sigh

Well, I can only assume that the water is somewhat polluted because of all of the motorized craft they have going on there....Not to mention, it is man made (if I remember correctly) so without cleaning it, there isn't as much wild life in it to do their natural things that can tend to keep the water cleaner....then again, it could just be the florida swamp mess.

I remember River Country!!! The last time we were at Disney, we rented the water mice from the poly and were zipping around the lake, I wondered what that was that piece of land was, now I remember!!! I liked the RC, it was nearby, not far out like some of the other water parks. Thanks for the pic. bdinger!

I haven't heard the pollution stories. only thing I've heard is the virus/bacteria in all the natural waterways.mageloff wrote:I have heard simlilar stories...csquare77 wrote:I thought they also said something about Bay Lake being polluted?

There were some reports years ago about fuel and oil pollution in the lake from the watercraft. Disney wasn't being as diligent with maintenance and refueling as they should have been.
I don't think it would have actually been an issue for anyone swimming in the lake (that is, I don't think the problem was discovered by testing water quality, but by monitoring maintenance procedures).
I assume they've taken care of those issues since they were made public, but I haven't heard any more about it since then.
There's no reason the lake would have to be polluted, even given the amount of traffic on the lake, if proper procedures are followed.
