Expedition Everest

Post by Brian845 » May Thu 23, 2013 10:58 am

Hi all,

We're planning a trip for March 2014, and my son and I are planning to ride Expedition Everest for the first time. I'm just wondering when the last time it was refurbished, 'cos it would be a major disappointment if we couldn't ride it for some reason.

I assume the Yeti is still broken?

Brian

The Yeti is still stationery, but I don't know that you will find a refurbishment schedule quite that far out yet. It is still a very good attraction, even with the Yeti in disco mode. I can only imagine how much better it would have been to see it when the Yeti was swiping at the trains!

Ok, it sounds like a stupid question but I only rode EE in 2010. There is a Yeti? I only remember the shadow of the Yeti which was wrecking the track.

Yeah, you REALLY have to look for it. It's there, just a big blob of white fur with a strobe flashing on it as you roar past. It used to swipe down at the track but doesn't any longer. The strobe is what gives it the nickname "Disco Yeti."

The yeti is towards the very end of the attraction. You will see it (briefly) during the last time you go inside the mountain. After the main 80 ft drop you will go through two more mountain caves. The yeti will be in the second cave. I personally think you get the best view of the yeti sitting further back in the train with the way the three strobes hit the yeti. The yeti will be on the right of your forward motion. Here is a shot I was able to get of the yeti with my iPhone when I decided to do rope drop at AK and ride it 5 times in a row. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... e68354f452 There is always talk about refurbishing the attraction to finally fix the yeti, but I seriously doubt it will ever happen. The word on the street is that in order to properly repair the yeti the mountain and track would have to be disassembled.

I've heard that too but I think it's just not a high priority. With all the animaltronic attractions and all the smart engineers at Disney-I gotta believe if they wanted it fixed-there would be a working
Yeti by now!!

There really aren't that many, most of them are contract so when the project is done, so are they. For sure it's not a high priority though, the ride works and it is safe, so it is not the biggest fire to put out.

Don't feel bad, I didn't see the "real" Yeti until my second or third trip on EE. I knew he was there because I had read about it, but I only saw the shadow version too...
You did a nice job capturing him Len!

Wizz it has been discussed in detail on other boards and CMs have talked about it. The foundation cracked from the force of the yeti. In order to repair the base for the yeti, the mountain has to be taken down. Everest just turned 7 years old so I doubt it will be getting a major refurb in the coming months. Maybe around the time it turns 10 we will see it go down for a refurbishment.

Again, as noted, not a high priority. If it were, they would have fixed it sooner.

Point taken about priority, but also keep in mind how it would be if a brand new attraction was taken down for 6 months to fix the foundation of an audio animatronic. Refurbs are done when there are multiple issues with an attraction. If every time something broke an attraction was closed Disney would not have any attractions open. For instance Mad Tea Party was closed this month to (as rumored) repaint all the cups, redo the floor, and fix the braking system.

Which is why complaints about peeling paint are truly pointless, safety is always the top priority. Sure a ride looks rough around the edges, or a figure does not work, but you know the brakes were checked and you won't be slamming into another car at the station. :D

Let's not joke about that as I do remember what happened at DLR in September 2003. Safety is and always be a top priority.

Peeling paint complaints show basic upkeep and attention to details. It does upset people because seeing faded/peeled paint and blown light bulbs shows a lack of attention. That is for another topic and another discussion. Major refurbs address numerous issues and allow for upgrades/updates. Basic upkeep shows care and attention to detail.

That was not what I was talking about, you got to get your head in the game man. :D

But anyway, cosmetic faults do not equate to a lack of attention, they most likely were noted when first seen, that issue is most likely lack of resources, meaning less staff. You can see it more during the slow times because the big rides may not open with the park because they haven't completed inspections yet. It is lame to do, but it hasn't resulted in less guests.

It is still a great ride, I have only seen yeti swipe once and honestly the yeti hasn't functioned properly since the ride opened. I honestly believe it never truly functioned properly but disney was pressed to open the ride and said oh well. If you watch the show for the making of Everest the yeti had a lot of movement designed into the ride but I think that was the last time the yeti actually worked. Haha :) :mickey: :donald:
