Exactly... meaning they can get away with it as long as they keep it under a certain value.

Haha likewise with me. I definitely don't want to give in and wear a wristband around all day. It just seems really uncomfortable. Is there any talk about how waterproof these things will be? I'm kind of curious to know how this will work out with the water parks and some deluxe resort pools that you need a room key to gain access. Currently the pools just check for the resort code in the number, but with the bands I'm assuming there will be another scanner. I really wonder if these bands are waterproof that you can go swimming with them on.

They're sort of a plastic-rubber kind of material and decently sized, I am guessing there will be a touch point entry at the pools that require it.

I'm not excited about wearing a wristband all day either. I can't wear a watch of any type - leather, plastic, metal - because my wrist breaks out in an irritated rash. I can only imagine what wearing one of these things all day for several days in a row would do. I'd have to clip it to a lanyard or something.

I would assume you could put the wristband wherever you wanted. This is not junior high where you have to keep your shirt tucked in and shoes tied or you get sent to the principal's office. ;)

the physical band part doesn't bother me as my right wrist currently has 7 bands, including my big bulky G-Shock watch. What can I say....i'm a pirate in the sense that I like souvenirs and keep said souvenirs on my wrist.

Oh what a relief!

It's just that a wristband, if not worn on the wrist, is a rather awkward object to hang onto. That was my point. The card-ticket-keys are the size of other cards and fit in pockets or wallets without much fuss. A wristband won't go in a wallet, and makes a lump in a pocket.

I wonder, since they are providing RFID chipped cards to off site guests, if you can request one of those if you have some sort of allergy to the wristband? I'm thinking F1gment will not tolerate the wristband well, and both of us are allergic to some off the wall stuff, so the band could be a problem. Especially on a longer trip of several days.
Does anyone know what material they are made from yet? I'm sure Disney would be smart enough to go the latex free route right?

Did they say they are doing that? It sounded like it was, at least for now, only for on site customers. Other than for people who are doing full vacations and staying on property, it really doesn't make fiscal sense since rf bracelets, while cheap, are still more expensive than the media they use now.

I imagine they also selected hypo-alergenic material, just like they do with the bedding in the rooms.

I wouldn't be too worried about a short since rf items are usually buried in plastic and also do not contain any actual charge, they pull the charge from the readers through copper. Which also allows, if you are so bold/have the time, for you to "modify" your device by melting the band in acetone and extracting the components and inserting them in whatever you want.

Guys, it's resort guests ONLY who purchase a ticket package with the room who get the bands. Not EVERYONE.

I'll have the band for one day of my trip then. This trip was such a hodge podge of planning. But will still be fun.

Passive ones do, if you have to pretty much touch the readers, it's passive. If you can be further away, then they have a battery in them, which would be very expensive compared to passive tags. The other issue is that if they were active tags, they could be read by readers from a greater distance, which would lead to a lot of problems with interferance when you consider that you have thousands of active tags running about the shops, hotels, etc.
