Yes, the current song is displayed in the player - but to return to the initial question:
If I understood rdeacon correctly, it's not possible to build a "Now playing" page due to the encoder on which the Background stream is running (The request stream's running on a different encoder which is supporting that) - so I guess there won't be a playlist.
