Oh, and Sub, if you'd read the rest of my post, I was making a comment more about 12-month contracts and my personal experience with both Cable and DSL in my area... the comment wasn't ignorant, it just wasn't universal.

I really don't care. As long as I can get my 24k connection and do alittle surfing I'm fine. It does what I need it to do, it may take ALOT longer but as long as it works. Once your used to it, you hardly notice.

Just think though.
Let's say it takes a broadband user 1 second to view a page while dialup takes 5 seconds.

If the average person browses 100 pages a day thats rounded to
Broadband: 1.5 minutes
Dialup: 8 minutes
Per day lost to load time.

Mutiply that per year (rounded | m = minutes
Broadbad: 365 x 1.5 = 548m / 60m = 9 hours lost per year
Dialup: 365 x 8 = 2920m / 60m = 49 hours lost per year

That's a lot of lost hours. Over a full work week.

I could never get used to it...

Three people I know have dial-up -- my girlfriend and my mom and dad. My girlfriend is under contract through who knows when with MSN. Well, I take that back, her contact is ending soon. She is amazed how clean and fast cable modem is, which I have. She still has 54k dial-up with that express function that when you use it makes all of the images appear smeared. She is paying upwards of $21-$23 for dial-up per month.

She can't wait to invest in cable modem as I am only paying $$25-$29 or so, so just a few $$$ more a month for a direct and faster line. Plus I bundle it with local cable service.

I am not going to get into my parents and their dial-up. Although my mom is all knowing when it comes to computers and the Internet, my father is beind the times. So, best not confuse him. It's a whole different story for another time, lol.

In my area I can't get cable or a land dsl and I'm not ready to put a wireless dsl tower on my roof, so I'm stuck with the sucky dialup. But please don't tease me because of my tiny bandwith!

Since my absence, I convinced the parents to get dsl. Its 768k dsl but still its better than dial-up. I'm happy with the connection but why are my speed times so low. Any recommendations for tweaking or are they suppose to be like this? I'm not too knowledgeable on these things.

I think DSL is technically better due to is non-shared architechure. It is also more expensive to setup for the provider. Cable already has fiber and coax run, which enables then to offer higher bandwidth easier. Cable is designed for 45 Mb/s, if I remember correctly. If cable came out and offered that today, it would not leave "advancements and improvements" they can charge extra for. For example, Cox offers a 3 Mb/s and 5Mb/s service, or something like that. And all they change is the rate limiter setting on your service.

I have little experience with DSL, but I assume it is similar to T1's which I am familiar with ( I even had one to my house, before DSL and Cable ( I did Web Hosting out of my house)).

If I am not mistaken, there are also laws preventing DSL from offering faster service. But I could be wrong about that. I feel Cable has too many advantages... lack of equal laws being one of them. They try so hard to prevent the Telco's from doing TV over copper, which does work, as I had it for a time.

On the other hand.... I may be just spiting out non-sense. I'll blame it on being past my bed time.
