SPOILER ALERT
So, In WDW, maybe you heard about the new additions on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. But "Mermaid Waters, that be your path."
Disney added some mermaids to the ride. You can find one before the drop within the grotto, and may even spot a few swimming along your boat.
This is so cool! Can't wait to see it for real!
You can read more about it on the Disney Parks Blog.

There is already an ongoing discussion of the mermaids over in this thread...

The mermaids do sound to be a bit underwhelming addition to the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the moment.

Always a fan of mermaids i was excited about this. Saw it on our last trip, fall 2012 - while it's not jaw dropping impressive, it's one more "layer of the onion" in the theming. I liked it!

True, but I will leave this thread open as it is specifically discussing the mermaid addition to POTC while the other is a general thread references changes in the parks...
I for one was actually unaware of what the changes since September were as I've been a bit disconnected lately.

Hmmmmmmmm, we already got mermaids in Peter Pan, IASW, and The Little Mermaid, do we now need them in POTC too? Isn't that enough of Mermaids in the rides? What next? Mermaid ghost in the Haunted Mansion? A Cyber-mermaid for Space Mountain?

Hmm sounds like someone never watched On Stranger Tides.

I've seen POTC4, Len90. For what reason do we need to keep changing the ride for every sequel that gets made? Will we able to recognize the original ride once they made all the changes after they do POTC19?

The essence of the ride hasn't changed. They've just added in small details to reflect the hugely popular Jack Sparrow movies. I personally didn't notice the mermaids at all. So it's not like it's an intrusive addition.
I chuckled at your "cyber mermaid" conjecture. Not sure how a robotic mermaid would swim in space, since there's nothing against which to apply a force and move, but imagining how they would look made me laugh.

Someone with more art skills than I should draw a cyber mermaid and post it here.

I think cy has really summed it up well. They have made updates to try and keep the attraction fresh as opposed to something like CoP where they won't even replace the carpeting.
Keep in mind with the updates they have really just changed around the added features over the years. Blackbeard replaced Davy Jones on the mist. The mermaids are added along with a couple of Jack Sparrow's. I personally haven't really minded what they have done with POTC. The main attraction is still the same.

I think the changes made to the Haunted Mansion have been updates to keep it fresh without changing the original ride too much (such as the recent changes with the Hitchhiking Ghosts). POTC is nothing more really than merchandising product placement (gotta sell those POTC movie DVD's after all).

Having a hard time with the cyber-mermaid for Space Mountain, but OK with the Phantom Mermaid over at the HM?

Well, yeah. Ghosts can do whatever they want. If we're to believe that a cyber mermaid is a physical being bounded by the confines of space-time and the laws of physics that pertain therein, then it matters. Ghosts are not bound to space-time and therefore are not subject to the laws of physics.

Very true, but I do also think that the average guest would want to see a link to all the movies in the attraction. They don't realize that the original movie was based off the attraction and then just went on from there. The average guest wants to probably see facets of all the movies in the attraction to think that the attraction is fresh.
With HM the updates done inside probably are not even noticed by most of the average guests. They don't appreciate the new hitchhiking ghosts like you or me would. We definitely could talk about this for hours one day and just come to the agreement that it is all marketing. POTC has a lucrative merchandise line in part due to the success of the movies. Thus the want to add new things so Disney can probably generate more merchandise off of it. Haunted Mansion flopped with it's movie and there really is no merchandise in the parks for it either. Thus there is no desire to probably institute drastic changes. Just my opinion on it. Somewhere TDO has to be thinking about the $$$ for each.
