I'm reasonably new around here, so forgive my naïveté...

What is the deal with hating Duffy?

While most Disney characters are created to play a role in an animated film and then find their ways to the theme-parks, or created as characters in a theme-park ride (like Figment), Duffy was created solely for commercial reasons to compete with the "Build-a-bear" stores that are in the malls. Thus, the rather crass money-grubbing aspect of his genesis makes him a bit unappealing (or downright revolting) to some people.

sadly, Jar-Jar was the same in the Star Wars movies... had to try to snag a younger audience

Well, yeah, on a certain level. I do like Jar-Jar. Does this mean you guys are kicking me out of the sandbox?

I didn't know the back story of Duffy. He's not the fluffy bear from Toy Story 3, I take it? I thought he was named Duffy. Or Duff. Or something like that.

and at least he is in a disney story of some kind...

OH YEAH! Now I remember. I can't watch TS3 again for a very long time. My older daughter will be a senior in high school next year. Tugs on the heart strings WAAAYYYYY too much.

ahhhh, the patanted PIXAR moment... who else can immerse you into a CG world, and have you interact in such a way to illicit that kind of response?

I've never seen such strong reactions over a stuffed bear. Thanks for letting me play in the sandbox.

Out of curiosity, H - do you dislike the bear for the aforementioned reason or do you have another reason for disliking it?

Am I the only one who is indifferent to the whole Duffy thing? I can take him or leave him, either way.

On our last visit, my daughter and I were in Epcot when I stated we'd never purchase a Duffy purely out of principle. The Cast Member overheard me and shouted back, "Many people agree with you!"

If Duffy had appeared in ANY Mickey Mouse cartoon, I'd have no problem with Disney marketing him. But he was created purely to extract money from guests. There are plenty other avenues for revenue. I think they need to re-think this one.
