Does anyone know why the skyride from Fantasyland to Tomorrowland was removed? I used to love the overhead pictures on it.

I don't think there was a public reason stated, but most seem to agree that it had a lot to do with liability and a complete lack of control of the cars and what goes on within them.
At DLR the annual winds did not help either.

So they shut it down in Disneyland too.?. That's a shame. I know they were up there all of those years.

I agree, it was always so much fun. It was kinda like Google Maps before the age of the computer. And it never hurt that it terrified my sister at the turn between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. She always thought the car would jump off the cable when it started banging on the bumper (I of course didn't help to assuage her fears).

Almost 20 years now, the old fantasyland station is slowly being covered up by the trees.
I just did a quick look, and apparently at DLR ours was getting stress cracks as well, so that was also bad.

No way, it can't be almost 20 years. I'm not THAT old yet...at least that's what I keep telling myself.

1994 was when DLR closed theirs, followed by everyone else.

I was thinking DLR closed their attraction first...

Yes, DLR's was closed much before WDW's...in fact, we rode Skyway at WDW in 1998 on our honeymoon...

Closing dates for the skyway:
Disneyland: Nov. 1994... Fantasyland station remains and tomorrowland station was demolished
Tokyo: November 1998... Fantasyland station was removed and tomorrowland station was converted to a shop
WDW: November 1999... Tomorrowland station was demolished and the fantasylad station is being demolished for restrooms
Supposedly each was permanently closed in the months following a major incident. In the spring of 1994 a guest jumped from a car 20 feet up at Disneyland. However the main reason cited was stress cracks by the Matterhorn. In early 1999 a worker was killed while cleaning a platform and the attraction was turned on.

Growing up in LA, I was a Disneyland girl originally. I loved the Skyway, but my sister called them the "puke buckets" because she always got motion sickness when riding! My favorite thing was to time riding the Skyway right during the fireworks show, it was so magical! The fireworks would be exploding all around you, I can still remember how awesome this was!

That would be a pretty amazing vantage point for the fireworks from the Skyway. I'm surprised they would have that running during the fireworks though...

I remember riding in the Skyway at WDW on the 4th of July as a child...we were up there for Disney's celebration of the 4th. I don't remember much of it, but I remember I was amazed!

I remember wanting to ride it in Jan '99. I was so crowded that weekend, I figured I would have rode it the next time that I went.

But it gone the next time (2000). So maybe everyone else riding it knew something about it shutting down.
