So we're planning our next trip for August 2011 which will be during the big Fantasyland Renovation. With such a large part of the park being unavailable, I'm wondering if we'll have to explore areas I wasn't planning on going to. What's everyone's opinion of Tom Sawyer Island?

Wow, I have not been to Tom Sawyer island in forever! I think the last time I was 6 or 9! I'm now 33. DH and I were saying on our next trip, we'd like to visit. I know Future Guy and his DW were there on their last visit. He would be able to elaborate on this topic.

I went to Tom Sawyer Island a few years ago (Jan 2008) and everything was still there. I don't think anything has changed since then. I know it changed in DL to some kind of pirate island...but it's still the same old Tom Sawyer Island in the MK.

If Aunt Polly's Dockside Diner was still open, Tom Sawyer Island would be a lot better than it is. I'm not saying it's horrible or anything though.
To the OP: The current Fantasyland will still be available (Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh, Snow White's Scary Adventure, Dumbo [we'll have to see if they open the new Dumbo area before they close the original], Tea Cups, etc.) will be available during the expansion construction. It won't be closed. Mickey's Toontown Fair on the other hand will be demolished... if it hasn't been cut from the budget, of course. We'll see in a few months.

Wdw does not have RRCTS.
We went across to Tom Sawyers Island in February, everything was pretty much the same. Aunt Polly's not being open kind of spoils it but it is still good for a quiet walk and you can get some good pictures from the Island. If you go you'll have to get the DH to chase you through the caves that is hilarious even if you are an adult.

For us it's kind of a "check the box" visit every couple of years. The first time was OK (the barrel walkway, caves, etc.) but there's nothing for us that has any paticular interest except the challenge of trying to find the paint brushes. People who have found them have told us you need to go over on the first boats after opening to improve your chances. Oh well, maybe someday. I do think you have to go at least once though. I know several people who regret not going on/to attractions that are now closed. (River Country, Horizons, etc.) Not predicting, just saying.

getting my parks confuzzled again, sorry!
I've heard the same as JimB, if you don't go over first thing in the morning you won't find any paitnt brushes...we've pretty much skipped Tom Sawyer's Island ever since we went over to eat at Aunt Polly's and got stuck there for a really long time due to a huge downpour and the rafts shut down...we were there for hours with nothing to do or see...and with Aunt Polly's gone...
I think it would be fun to go at least once if you had younger children though...

So what happens when you find the paint brushes?? I've heard of this but wasn't sure what the "reward" is, if any. There was a restaurant on the island at one time? It's been so long since I've been. I think we need to visit on our next trip.

The last I heard is if you find a paint brush you can get a set of fastpasses for everyone in your party for Splash or BTMW. They have to be present. Take the brush to one of the Cast Members. To find the paint brushes you have to go as soon as the Island opens. Usually around 10:00 a.m. They only do this once per day. By the mid day/afternoon they are all gone. We like Tom Sawyers Island but admit we do not get around to it on every trip. It is fun to do. It is a great place to relax. We like playing checkers on the island. Depending on the ages of your kids they may enjoy this too.

Found this website with some tips for locating the brushes, there are 10 in all - not sure I agree with the deception of turning in more than one brush but to each their own...another web site indicated the brushes were good for more than just the two attractions....good tip about looking for the paint smears...

Wow you were up early this morning! Thanks for the info. We keep trying to do this but it never works out with our schedule. It has been on the agenda for each trip. We are traveling with friends next year and they have 3 kids. I am sure we will do it then. It is a good game for the little one since she will be too young to ride most of the rides.

Thanks for sharing Amy! When B-dude and I go again, we've always wanted to do rope drop at MK, this would be a good day to head over to the island!!!
