I thought I read somewhere that the way the board is set up there is no way to win so they will be playing forever

I believe it's set up as a stalemate, yeah. I can't remember what the exact situation is called, though (there's a funky official chess name for the kind of stalemate, or so I was told on Keys to the Kingdom).
Poor guys.

Yep. The Imagineers spoke to many pro chess players on an endless game scenario and came up with the configuration we all see today.
We are all a little weird
And life's a little weird,
And when we find someone whose
Weirdness is compatible with ours,
We join up with them and fall in
Mutual weirdness and call it Love.”
― Dr. Seuss
