Wifi?

I was last at the Boardwalk in 2008, and I was excited to try the hotel's Wifi with my new Ipod touch. Well, the Wifi in the hotel was hit or miss. Actually, it only worked around the business center. I didn't take the Ipod around the rest of the World, but it made me think. Has anyone seen any improvement in Disney's Wifi around the entire resort area since 2008? Does Disney offer Wifi?

Disney resorts really don't care about Guests and WiFi. They have the guest connections outsourced, and they are happy with that. But the out sourced people are only doing wired.
Now this is just speculation. But I think Disney actively does not want guest WiFi equipment to work. This is a vacation and the WiFi gets in the way of the magic. Plus it gives them more spectrum to work with. The Parks and resorts are pretty well blanketed with locked down WDW_something SID. Which I assume is their internal one.
With the wired system in place, guests can use it in there rooms but you'll have fewer people trying to "work" at the pool. This will be ending over the next few years as more and more equipment is just 3G/4G/WiMax aware.
Right now what a lot of DVCers do is we have either a router that lives down at WDW or we carry an airport express this comes up on the DisBoards all the time.
The airport express is an awesome little device I travel a bit for work these days, and I carry mine when ever I leave for an overnight trip. It is SO nice to be able to sit in the room on the bed and watch TV with my laptop open.

I don't know how Disney does it, but I rarely miss the internet while I'm at Disney. I'm one of those people who always has to stay connected, but I guess I do so much running around during the day that I don't even realize that I need it and then crash at night before I can even think about checking my email or Facebook or anything. It is actually nice to have that break from technology for awhile.

One of the big things I use the Free DVC Internet connection for is every night I upload all my pictures (just the photo files, no processing) to my home server. I use to always fear I'd lose or have my photo cards stolen.
If I want to gloat I'll upload one or two photos to show what we did today... but typically I don't feel like it. Takes some time and thought to select pictures. Uploading everything is just an scp command.

Actually, WDW is currently in the process of adding WiFi to the majority of the public rooms at the resorts...but even so, I agree with what Spodie wrote...I am connected at home 24/7, but when I'm at the World, it's just not that important.

We were in Vero Beach last October and Disney had an excellent wifi service there. Enabled me to pick up those all important footy results on my Archos.

That's good news.

I guess I am one of those that feels lost without checking my email for a day. I usually take my laptop with me if I'm going to be down for an extended period. Since we will be down there this Summer for a week, I'll take my laptop and I'll end up paying the fee for at least 2 or 3 days. I know they make a killing on it. But, if work calls even on vacation, I like to be connected.

Around here at work we are connected 24/7 and I certainly do not want to be in conact with this place when I am on vacation that is for sure. I believe in total disconnect at that time

Our next trip I am going to try to not do anything, technology-wise, except for my cell phone. I too am "wired" 24/7 and I think it will be a nice break this time to just relax with my husband by the pool, or a nice dinner!

We had two rooms at the yacht club when we were there earlier this month. We brought along an apple aiport express just in case we bought the Internet. We ended up buying it the first night and after that it was not even worth the effort to go online. If I really needed to look anything up, I just used my iPhone. The only reason I feel you should take a computer to Disney is to just back up your pictures that you take everyday. We learned this the hard way when I lost all my animal kingdom pictures in 2006.

I like to have internet at night at the hotel just so I can stay in touch with everyone. But now that I have my iPhone I can just use that.

I just used the iPhone last time I went. For the amount of time I used the internet, it was more than enough. I didn't even feel like turning on my computer every night to transfer the pictures onto an external hard drive.
