EPCOT poster/map circa 1982

Post by srik » Apr Wed 29, 2009 2:49 pm

I rediscovered this old poster/map from 1982 that I thought you folk might get a kick out of. This is a large poster, approximately 3'x4', that hung on my bedroom wall growing up.

Note the attractions that weren't open; Horizons has a note indicating (Opening October 1983), and The Living Seas and Equatorial Africa just indicate (Future).

You can click through to my flickr set with closeup shots.

Wow...that's great stuff. I have asked my parents if they can find pictures from my first trip to WDW back in '86. I'll have to post a few of them once I get them scanned in.

That's pretty cool. I always think about how much was lost from old EPCOT to new Epcot, but attraction-wise, the count is about the same.

They re-released something similar to this during EPCOT's 25th Anniversary. It was very nice to look at...How I wish EPCOT was still called EPCOT Center.

Great picture srik!
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha

Great find there! It both sucks and is nice to see old rides that I'd never get a chance to experience. :P

I loved the old detailed drawings of the attractions that used to go on these maps. Like how you can see the little cars for WoM? That's cool. I also like that it said the park was "inspired by" Walt's dream and not representative of it. They seemed more honest back in the day.

Very cool find. :)

That's awesome, definately a treasure that you should hang on to. I agree, it's hard to see the old attractions that were favorites that don't exist anymore.

Thanks for sharing with us though! :D

Glad everyone is enjoying this!

I have one from Magic Kingdom - circa 1987, that I'll try to upload next week.

Wall maps are great. Sadly they don't sell them anymore. They should really bring them back.

Very cool. I love how it's got Equatorial Africa in the World Showcase.

How cool - thanks for sharing. Somewhere back at the old homestead, I'll bet my family has guidebooks from every WDW park from 1971-1999. Someday I'll find them...someday.

That is awesome. I, too, love seeing the older things from WDW. It's amazing where we have been and how far we have come. I think we all yearn for those former days. It is neat that it included Equitorial Africa in WS as well Horizons and The Living Seas. I have a "preview book" from prior to EPCOT Center's opening and it lists that Israel and Spain are future attractions in WS in addition to Eq. Africa. I wonder where they were planning to put those pavilions?
Are we there yet? When can we go back?

I don't know what's worse, the anticipation of going or the withdrawals after getting home.
