That is sad.. but probably true. I try not to think of Disney as the large corp. entity it is....

Corperations are not magical

You should see how poorly they treat Cast Members. The break rooms are awful, there is no magic left. CMs used to get respect. CMs now get trashed both by the guests and the management. Example of how poorly CMs are treated:

In 1981 tickets were approx $30.
The average transportation CM pay: $5.80 per hour

In 2005 tickets are approx $60
The average transportation CM pay: $6.80 per hour

So cast members got a dollar raise per hour in 24 years. You should see the cast member parking lots. 95% of the vehicles look like they can barely move.

When you become a cast member they put you through a course called Traditions. In that course they tell you that at WDW there are 55,000 employees and that Disney can't afford to pay everyone "top dollar" or they would have to charge $150 per ticket. It's a load of garbage. The demand on the CMs versus the pay is awful. If you don't love Disney, there is no reason to work there. It's kind of like the Matrix. Everyone knows its bad, most think there is nothing you can do about it. Then there are that few who believe that one day it will all become better again.

Being a CM is maybe a step up from working at a fast food restaurant so the pay is reflective of that. They have a high turnover and most CM's don't come close to working hours per week. We like to think of being a CM as some great job but the reality of it is that McDonalds probably pays better.

And then there are us Disney freaks who can only hope to work at Disney. I have thought about taking off for a month to go work there just to see what it is like. I have one friend who works there for two weeks a year just to say he works for Disney.

That's due mostly to the fact the ABC properties are draining Disney. The TV networks have always lost money in a big way thanks to over paid actors. They pay more for the shows then they make with the hope they will make up the difference later in reruns. Very seldom does that work, so networks are always sucking their home corporation dry.

I think that it is the ultimate dream for most Disney nuts... but it is a dream. And what I mean by that is anyplace you work loses it luster after you work there.

Its much better to not know the behind the scenes action to preserve the magic. No matter how cool a job is... in the end its just that a job.

With that behind said.. I still think it would be cool to be part of that magic, to make a guest day by doing a few simple, but meaningful things. I've had cast members do special things for me, and it really makes your day.

For example. I got engaged in the Magic Kingdom. After I was done proposing a couple of cast members ran down to us and gave us Mickey and Minnie bridegroom hats, out of their own pocket. They were just excited to see us get engaged. It made the event even that more special.

I just don't know if I would work there.... WDW is too special for me to have it ruined by an idiot manager.

I never thought about that.
But like you said, it would be nice to spread a little Pixie Dust of my own. I do it now by taking various members of my wifes family each time we go. I usually end up paying for 3-4 rooms to take them, but the look on the childrens face makes it worth it.
Sure, I could have a more expensive house or more fancy cars, but to be able to create childhood memories for others, priceless.
