Also serves as a good reminder that once Disney has you in the system, they can access your information. I'll remember this next time I get a blank stare at the front desk.

when you go away on vacation, that's when you have to keep your guard up the most. how many advertisements or anouncements are made per year saying thing like "keep your money not in your pocket, but around your neck", "make copies of any and all documentation you have just in case", etc? I see way too many.

People are so sad sometimes.

And people sure don't think sometimes.

i hear about this type of thing so many times that I would like to think there is no possible way I could ever get scammed like this. Although one thing i've learned is to never say never, tho I don't think i'd ever fall for something like this.

i understand that it could be easy to fall for something like this for some people, who pick up a resort phone and automatically assume it's someone trustworthy from disney...especially with the year of a million dreams...

maybe people who don't go there often wouldn't realize...but disney would never solicit people over the phone in their rooms to try to give them "a deal"....

however, let's say you didn't know that... i think the minute the person on the phone asked for my credit card, i'd stop and realize something was definitely wrong. unless i made the call myself and know who i was speaking to, i'd never even dream about giving out my credit card info or any info.

i guess the con artist must have been very believable, though, especially to someone who doesn't know disney and their hospitality like the back of their hand...

Mmm - a predictable scam but still easy to fall for. One is not safe anywhere from these people.

We were in an All Star resort last month. Disney have put leaflets in all the rooms warning you of this scam and telling you they would never ask for these details over the phone. This scam could really ruin your vacation.

This is so sad. I would never provide my credit card number over the phone and quite honestly, I do not leave it with the front desk for purchases either. It is disappointing that these ppl have to learn the hard way.

I think that's the key for me. I understand it's easy to let your guard down on vacation like that, but I think a good rule of thumb in general is not to give your credit card (or any personal info) to someone if you didn't initiate the transaction. I actually find it surprising people fell for it for that reason; there's no way to prove someone who phones you is ever who they say they are. But I can see how you'd feel safer than normal (or just more relaxed than normal) on vacation. I've heard lots of tales of people who were robbed in one manner or another at WDW - or other vacation - spots that'd probably never happen to them at home.

i dunno if anyone has seen this yet, but the cops apparently caught the guy who they believe has been doing this. he's a long time wdw visitor and former cast member. how depressing!

I heard something about that, where he was using his stolen CC numbers to buy WDW passes, and then use them himself or sell them at deep discounts. And it wasn't the first time he'd done it, apparently. Geesh.

yea, he got caught awhile back, apparently. i'm surprised disney didn't try to do anything about this sooner...like, leaving extra safety pamphlets out about giving out credit card numbers.
