For people with a lot of free time and Google Earth...

Post by DisBeamer » Nov Sun 04, 2007 3:23 am

I was just killing some time while I wait for something to finish at work and decided to browse over WDW through Google Earth (the high res satellite/areal picture viewer). I noticed that they'd updated the photos as the old 20k Leagues subs were gone now (which we figured out a while ago) so I started looking around some more. After looking over at Epcot, I realized why the landscaping looked a bit different - redder, mainly - over the MK. These images must have been taken while the Christmas decorations are up because you can see the tree and the lights and everything, especially in Epcot.

I assume they must be from 2006 but I'm not sure. They're not 'now', I don't think, because the awning outside the Haunted Mansion is still green and I understand it's red now. Kinda cool, if you're into that kind of thing. Not quite as good as being there for the holidays, but a nice little taste if you have some time to look around. :)

Epcot Tree Shot here.

Edit: I should add you can download Google Earth for free from ... google somewhere. If you search for it, it'll come up. Very entertaining. You can visit all the Disney parks in a matter of minutes.

I posted this a while ago. But I spent some time messing with google maps, and my maps of the parks, and my memory.

At some point I wanted to integrate photos I'd taken around the parks with it. Haven't done that yet.

I could spend an entire day surfing around Google Earth - it's super addicting.

I want to go to Disney World for Christmas this year! It's my favorite time of year there.

Wow you're correct! They have updated the picture. I have been on Google Earth since last spring and that picture didn't have any Christmas decorations in it. Thanks! Cool!

WOW  ... they updated the pics on google maps too. It must have been overnight because yesterday I was just on google maps looking at epcot and it was all the old pictures. That's really freaky. I'm going to miss seeing the horizons building in epcot. Mission Space is so boring from the sky...

edit: You can clearly see the epcot center logo on the ground behind the fountain in the new picture.

edit2: look at the massive crowds in MK

edit3: What's this? What's this? There's boxes everywhere! Anyone know what these things are on the middle island in Seven Seas Lagoon?

I just went to the aerial photos and I see TWO riverboats on Rivers of America. Are there really two sternwheelers operating?

I noted they'd updated the imagery. From what I can tell, it's from 2006, and *after* 8 November. The photos show the Epcot Christmas tree, which hadn't been put up when I was last in that park.

It's quite sad seeing the state of River Country: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&g ... &z=19&om=1

I love looking at the resorts from in the air, for completness, here's the other resorts:

Disneyland Resort
Tokyo Disney Resort
A half-built Hong Kong Disneyland
and finally,
Disneyland Resort Paris

The really strange thing is that the half-built Hong Kong Disneyland is actually -less- half-built than in the old image they had of it. I'm not sure when it changed, but a few months ago the image of the area clearly showed a mostly-constructed Space Mountain and other obvious MK features. Now it's just ... dirt. I don't understand why they'd update with an older picture.

Huh. They almost look like fireworks launch rigs? I dunno why those would be out there, though.

This is truely addictive. I was once told that WDW had its own power station, but I have searched for it on Google Earth and cannot find it. Does anyone know if it exists and where it is?

Yes Reedy Creek which is WDW has it's own power station. It is it's own district and has it's own government, police, fire, sanitation, and many other services. When Walt was planning to build WDW he got the state of Florida to make the property WDW is on it's own municipality. It has a mayor and council also. This is a move a lot of people in Florida are still upset over

Yesterday I just realized you could see anyplace on earth besides the Disney Resorts. I guess there was some sort of mental block before where I forget about everything but Disney. So, with this newly aquired knowledge, I went in search of Castaway Cay... and then my house.

Hehehe ... well most important things first, right? Disney Resorts > the rest of the world.

Google Earth is really addictive, though. I actually use it in my job so having it open is something I'm supposed to do, but it's so easy to get distracted. I think I looked up all the Disney Resorts the first day, then like, my house, my parents' house, my high school, university, Las Vegas strip, Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Forbidden City... Dangerous toy. :D WDW is my favorite though. I love rolling along the monorail from the MK to Epcot in time with the subsonic tracks. *geek*
