Screamscape is reporting...
(9/4/07) Screamscape has heard that Walt Disney World management has announced to Cast Members that with the removal of the new style Epcot logo from the top of Spaceship Earth, the park will return to using the classic EPCOT Center logo that was retired just before the start of the new Millennium. Suddenly all the reports from the past two weeks about vintage looking EPCOT Center logo merchandise returning to the shelves all makes sense. I’ve heard that new signage is already going up in places, so if you happen to come across one take a picture and send it in.
If anyone can confirm, that'd be great.

If you look in
this thread, they've started putting the old logo on new merchandise, and they mention taking signage down in the link provided there but the OP

Yea, the merchandise has been off and on. Every once in awhile through history you could get retro EPCOT gear. Some old signage has never actually come down (you can spot the old flower design in some places as well as "EPCOT" in all caps).
I'm intrested to see if they really go back to the old logo. I don't much care if it's EPCOT or Epcot, though I'm not not a fan of the current Epcot logo with the big C and SSE as the O...

I hope they bring back having symbols for each of the pavilions. Although I hope they do new versions of the old ones, and then there's at least two new places to make symbols of.

I agree with this... They already have the new SSE logo so maybe that's the plan, revive the pavilion logos.
I think that would be really cool as it was somewhat unique to Epcot.

Cool!

See, the whole "old pavillion" mentality is winning out!

Well, I'm not totally into the old pavilion mentality. I'm a graphic designer, so I really liked how the symbols themed the whole park graphically. I think they still look somewhat futuristic too. I like both the old and new pavilions, but like the old graphics.

I think the retro look is cool. EPCOT is probably the only place to get this merchandise huh?
I love it but I've heard people say it kind of is the opposite of what EPCOT represents. It almost seems like it's going backward, not forward like EPCOT is suppose to be about. I don't know if it's true. Perhaps it's just for the upcoming anniversary?

I wonder if this has to do with something I saw/happened back in January.
I was in the Land, and a CM had a jacket on, I being from Boston, was in a t-shirt and shorts. Anyway, I stopped and asked the CM about the "Epcot Center" logo on the jacket, it struck me odd in two ways. First, it was the old logo. Second the jacket looked brand new.
She told me that it was just a jacket she got at "Central Costuming" (or something like that.) I asked if she has seen any other stuff with that logo. She told me there were a few down there, I was shock they had all this "old" inventory of a logo that was older than the CM appeared to be.

Even though chronologically the change can be seen as going backwards, stylistically, the old graphics were more futuristic and in keeping with the original intent of EPCOT. That scripty font used with the wand on SE certainly wasn't very futuristic.
It reminds me of how Disney ended up handling the whole Tomorrowland issue. The old graphics represent a style that in the late 20th century was considered futuristic.
This topic got me thinking about all things futuristic, and I came across Jacques Fresco. I think Walt would have liked him. Some of his ideas are eerily close to what you see in the original concepts for EPCOT.
Here's a trailer for a film about Fresco:

Disney should hre him to design EPCOT, the city. I half expected to see a building similar to the central EPCOT building on there.

Even though the old logo is from the 80's I still think that it represents the future. I like it

Haven't heard anything more about this... wonder if it ended up not being true.
Screamscape has been really hit or miss recently.
