Today Disney announced:
The big news sent out to Cast Members today is that all Walt Disney World Resorts as well as the Disney Vacation Club Resorts will become 100% Smoke Free on June 1st, 2007. Disney says that guest demand for smoking optional rooms has declined steadily over the last five years and that currently only 3.5% of all rooms on property are smoking optional. The new policy also applies to not only the rooms, but patios, balconies and previously designated outdoor smoking areas. To my knowledge, Disney has not yet made the announcement to the media or general public.

Is this correct? I mean...I don't know if this counts, but can't people still smoke in their RVs while in Fort Wilderness?? Maybe that is an exeption. I'm glad to hear it though, they need to enforce the smoking spots in the parks though!

So wait a second, if even the outdoor spaces are now smoke free, where is a smoker supposed to go? I'm not a smoker, but it seems like that just will FORCE them to smoke in the room. What else can they do? Doesn't make sense to me.

Okay, now I see the announcement on Deb's site, but the wording is a bit different. Her site says:
The new policy applies to all guest rooms, patios and balconies and designates outdoor smoking areas at all resorts affected by the change.
Which makes more sense--now they have designated outdoor spots at the resorts just like in the parks. That's cool, and makes perfect sense.

I'm all for the change. I don't mind there being designated areas for people to smoke. I just wish those that do would abide by the restrictions. :mickey:

Wow. Nice attitude. I'll just be over here having no compassion for your vices, either.

Totally. The government HATES all the money that tobacco taxes bring in.

Given that it was such a tiny percentage of rooms that seemed to have been smoking optional anyway, I'm not sure how much this really impacts things. I actually stayed in a smoking-optional room at the Polynesian once because it had the best available view and I'm -really- allergic to cigarette smoke. The CM really wanted to give us the best view, so she said to go and 'sniff' and if it was too much for me to come back and they'd move us. We did so and I didn't smell smoke at all and ended up keeping the spifftacular view.

Flip side of that, I've been in a non-smoking room that reeked of smoke before (so much that we had to move). I think people who are gonna smoke in their rooms are going to do so no matter what the policy is (jmho). Unless they have people policing the patios and balconies, I don't see why people won't continue to smoke outside their non-smoking rooms either (though I admit it'd be nice if they made use of the designated areas - but unless there are a lot of those I don't see people hiking from one end of CBR to the other to have a cig, tho). *shrug*

It's an interesting idea anyway. It means there will be some nice views at the Poly that are less likely to be 'designated stinky' rooms anyway.

I'm personally happy they've extended their no smoking policy.

:!: :!: Last September we were leaving Epcot in the crowd at closing and a careless pig walking with his massive cigar waving wrecklessly and burned my 9yr old daughter's arm. My rage was restrained initially because at first it seemed like just a brush with no damage but it soon started to hurt...we stopped at a bathroom to see it in the light and it was blistering...not a nice way to end the evening at Disney!
I'm 100% in favor of the new smoking policy! :!: :!:

Over at Coronado Springs they had a couple of buildings just for smoking. I think it was buildings 8a and 8b of the cabanas. so that is actually a large percentage of that complex. Had to be at least 10% of the total capacity.
