it's still possible to do fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants same-day dining reservations, but it'll be kinda hard to get them before they're out. You'd have to reserve EARLY the morning of, if not a day or so before.
It's always suggested to make the reservations as soon as possible. If you cancel (I believe) at least 48 hours in advance, you won;t be charged anything...

Cancelation penalities only apply on ADRs that require credit card guarantees such as CRT and California Grill and the policy is 24 hours. All other ADRs that don't require CC don't have penalities.

I would alway make atleast one reservation, per day. Just so we can get in somewhere we want for dinner. I've always been able to cancel without a problem even inside the "lockin" period. Generaly I think as long as you cancel before you're okay.

We're not on the Dining Plan and, in the past, have always enjoyed the flexibility of being able to make our reservations on the day we plan to dine. Is this no longer possible due to the crowds caused by the Dining Plan?
April is Spring Break time, it's probably going to be busier. I'd make the reservations, you can always cancel later.

Yeah, I think it would be easier to make dining reservations ahead of time at day or two before to be sure. Yay Spring Break!
I think the # is still 407 WDW DINE

All in all, it's very annoying. My opinion of the Disney Dining Plan now is that it sucks. It just clogs up all of the restaurants and takes away a lot of the spontaneity of the trip. We never had this problem on past trips. We hate planning so far in advance for dinner, because who knows what we'll feel like doing much more than a day or two from when we plan to dine. Oh well...
I couldn't agree with you more. Really annoying how you can't get a reservation the day or a couple days prior.
A real bummer
