Huge refurbishment coming to the Haunted Mansion - if you have Disney summer vacation plans you'll want to take note that the HM will be closed for the ENTIRE summer vacation season.

one can only guess as to what they're going to be doing to it. Are they gonna add Eddie Murphy to the attraction, as they did Johnny Depp with POTC? juuuust kidding....atleast I hope I am wrong.

Big difference between Eddie and Johnny in this instance...
And that is that the POTC films have been profitable.
IMDb estimates Haunted Mansion's budget at $90mil.
It's domestic box office was about $75.8mil
UK b.o. was 8 mil pounds
Euro b.o. was about 9.6 mil Euro.
After current conversions, that comes out to about $103.8 mil worldwide box office gross, for a profit of 15.3%
The two POTC movies combined look like this:
Budget: $365mil
Worldwide box office take: $1.2bn
That's a profit of about 229%... which is a profit margin about 150 times better than HM's
Eddie Murphy will never be added to the Mansion.

the current rumors I've heard about the closing/refurb involve smoothing out the bumps in the ride track, upgrading the doom buggy speakers so there is not as much static and/or cut-outs, as well as enhanced effects to mirror those at DLR (the Bride, the floating Leota) and fixing a few of the effects in the graveyard. now, if all these get done, I;d be very impressed as the attraction was really starting to show it's age in December when Dr. Ravenscroft and I were there.

YES FIX SPEAKERS NOW PLEASE!!!!!! ouch those things hurt my ears and annoyed the heck out of my with all of the cut dialog. We all new this was on the way it was just a question of when. Now that they set a date I am extremely happy, nothing much in the Magic Kingdom has gotten attention in a while. And this is one of the highest profile attractions, and for the longest time was the highest profile period until POTC: COTBP came out, so it deserves a rehab.
P.S. to any Imagineers listening (reading this) make us proud to be Haunted Mansion fans.

This is so so soooooooooooooo needed. I would've hated to have HM under refurb last summer when I was there I think...but I was so disappointed when we were on it. It was my girlfriend's first time in WDW since she was like 5 when she was too afraid to go on and couldn't remember much anyway and I had talked about HM being my fave at MK and up there of all time and then it was kinda crappy :-\ The speakers mostly but there weer serious lighting effects and other issues which totally dissolved any illusion of the realism of the ride (i.e. seeing the metal pneumatic arms vividly everytime a ghoul popped up, like in some instances you could see them shining in the light) it looked very carnival spook house-ish.

Why the summer? why not wait till the winter time, that takes out of the main attractions in the MK.

I'm planning on visiting in August. I'll be upset to see the Mansion unavailable, but if it helps make the masion gorgeous again, then I'll be happy.

because they want to fix it up before Halloween, and since this winter is over, and Easter is quite busy, summer makes the most sense.

Good to hear it's going into refurb. It is a rather painful audio experience the way it is now. Also, is it me, or is the graveyard really really dark?

I'm for the rehab in the Mansion. I hated it when the audio would cut out during the most important lines of the attraction. I will be there when it reopens and I will make sure I'm the first in line

If nothing else, I at least hope the audio is the one thing they focus on. I'll be happy if the do no other work, but fix tha dang audio.

I don't remember it being extra dark, but I wouldn't doubt it. I'm sure Disney turns down the lights a bit to cover anything they wouldn't want us to see.
The refurb is much needed and I hope they get things all back in order again before I return!

Lets hope they do a proper rehab and fix the haunted mansion up. I would be happy with some new special effects, new leota, new bride, and please oh please a new sound system.
I'll ride it in March and look for the rehab on my next trip.

rdeacon: that is what my brother and I did that for the POTC rehab in DL. We went in February. just before it closed and went back in July for the movie and the new ride. It is awesome to do because you really get to appreciate what the Imagineers did.
