Living with the Land - no longer living!?!

Post by rdeacon » Sep Thu 21, 2006 9:57 pm

Ok does anyone care that the living with the land ride now has done away with the cast member and gone to a pre-recorded audio track?? I know its no Jungle Cruise or even Kilimanjaro Safaris, but I have feeling it lost something with the pre-recorded spiel. Give me a cast member any day!

Yeah, while some cast members were a bit dull on this one others were excellent and had tons of fun extra facts about what was growing at that time... Not sure how they can do it without a number of different tracks for different seasons. At least that was the only reported change to the ride in the recent rehab!

If there are interesting facts tailored to what's being presented, then it could be a step up. Some of those trained parrots were truly dismal. Some were great, though...

If they moronify it by adding Ellen or something like that, it'll be just another in a long series of changes that make me weep for humanity.

If it's suddenly narrated by Toy Story Woody, I think it's time to close down WDW and put up a nice Dunkin Donuts.
On the surface there is hunger and fear. Men still exercise unjust laws. They fight, tear one another to pieces. A mere few feet beneath the waves their reign ceases, their evil drowns. Here on the ocean floor is the only independence.

I would have to agree with the Captain on this one. I have always loved this ride and if they dumb it down it will become more frustrating than interesting.

Personally, I liked the tour guides. Ok, so they weren't all exciting, but they definitely added life to the ride. Besides, if there was something really exciting and new that day, they could point it out or you could even ask them what some strange looking plant is called. I'll wait till I see it for myself to be sure, but for now I say bring back the guides!
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

Is there a reason why they dumbed this down? I too thought one of the best things about this ride was the informational spiel. It just felt more real and more interesting coming from a live person.

I don't think we know that it's dumbed down yet. I'm just projecting my generally negative feelings about, well, almost everything onto the plan. My suspicion is that I'm not going to be happy with the result, but this could go in any number of directions and could theoretically be a big improvement.

I do agree that it was nice to have a human there to ask questions. One of the best parts of the Living Seas was talking to the student workers who took a real interest in the habitat and what was going on in there. Replacing those guys with an animated talking squid or something would make me grumpy, but just about everything does, really.

Also, hello again, subsonic. Didn't mean to bug out on you guys, but my interest in things tends to go in cycles. I get heavily into stuff, then burn out on it and move on to other things I'm interested in. But I usually come back.

Plus I can only hear so many minutes of that Boo to You parade before I need a minimum two week break from the station...

Yet another nerf to an EPCOT future world ride. I guess though moving to an automated voice is more inline with a community of the future...

I loved the one CM I had 2 years ago, he was from Costa Rica and he pointed out somestuff that was native to his land. And he had a really cool accent. I will miss having a CM on the boat teaching us about the plants and veggies.

I remember when I took my solo trip down there for my 25th birthday a few years back, the CM I got on Living with the Land was an older gent, probably in his 60s. He looked and sounded like he'd gone through this spiel thousands of times...

Yet he still sounded excited, interested, and glad to share information on all kinds of stuff with us.

A recording will always sound "interested" and can't "burn out" like a person can... but there is nothing like an individual with a passion for something talking about it.

I like the CM adding their personal touch. It makes the attraction a bit different each time, but we know the change is going to happen. So my question is, Who would be a good narrator for the recording?
