PotC it was definitely not from what I heard. I think they saw how successful Pirates was and decided they could recreate that with their next popular longstanding attraction. Not so much...
I'm curious what attraction next sparks a movie though. There aren't a lot left that aren't from a movie and have theming enough to be one. Maybe Mickey's Philarmagic... which is really Fantasia esque. Mission Space?!

Hmmm... I thought that PotC came after Haunted Mansion though. I thought it went Country Bear Jamboree (never saw it, never cared to see it), Haunted Mansion, and then Pirates.

I think Haunted Mansion came out a few months after Pirates.

Well, they came out in the same year, from what I found on IMDB. But I'm pretty sure I watched the Haunted Mansion before PotC, but that is just me personally.

The first PoTC was released in July 2003 and The (super bad) Haunted Mansion was released in November 2003. Edit: In North America, anyway.
It's a shame the Haunted Mansion move was soooooo ... not good. It really was probably the only other ride that wasn't already based on a movie that had enough of it's own 'mythology' to make into a film.

That tells me they were in production at the same time, so not based on the success of the other. I don't know if that's good or bad. HM bombed so badly...

I think they approached that movie wrong. It should have been a story about the tragic history of the house and its individual inhabitants. I know there's fan fiction out there for most of the ghosts, and some stories are even official now, such as the bride story. Then, maybe a few scenes near the end of someone beng able to free the ghosts.
I didn't like the idea of how the mansion was already haunted at the start of the movie and I would be more interested to see how the mansion has become haunted over time.

I agree. I was hoping that was what the movie was going to be. However, as soon as I learned Eddie Murphy was going to be in it, that went out the window. I don't understand why they took this approach. Maybe they thought it would be too horror-ish and not like Disney to have a movie about people dying and the mansion becoming haunted.

just a reminder that the thread is about the rehab to HM, not the movie

I know the post above me said to be on topic, so I'll make my comment quick.

The reason Disney made it less "horror-ish" might be because they were aiming for a younger audience that might have been too afraid if it wasn't a comedy. I think the audience they were trying to reach wasn't what it should have been.

In response to your question:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870154/
We talked about this somewhere else on this site but I can't seem to find it rite now.
Any who onto the subject at hand. I think if this rehab goes as well as the Disneyland rehab it will make the WDW HM 100x better than it is in it's current state. I just can't imagine who would let a ride deteriorate like that.

I think the irony in the Disneyland rehab was that it totally went against the storyline of the movie that it inspired, with the killer bride. It would be nice if they updated the bride in WDW to have a similar effect using the technology, but not something that will change the attic's story.

Haha, I forget about the regular household items that Disney still uses, such as lightbulbs. Do you think tehre's some warehouse on property just filled with lightbulbs?
Anyway, they probably figured that since it was in the Haunted Mansion, it wasn't as important to replace as say, some walkway lamposts. Afterall, the Mansion is supposed to be dark and neglected.
