I either seem to have very good luck or very bad luck because I don't think I've ever seen the inside of Space Mountain with the lights off from the TTA. :(

It must look awesome from the very edge of the dome with all the stars and asteroids racing towards you.

At night it's really cool because you can see things pretty clearly (the ride track, to some extent, but also the stars and the 'flying cookies'). If you're riding TTA during the day, though, your eyes usually barely adjust before you're leaving. It's like bright sunny Tomorrowland -> Welcome to Space Mountain -> Oh geez I'm blind -> Hey is that the line? -> bright sunny Tomorrowland.

I defnitely agree with you DisBeamer. Half the time my eyes are barely adjusting in time to realize where the heck everything is.

My question about Space Mountain is why they never open the queue line once you get past merge between FP/Standby. It would probably kill some of the line in the rest of the queue.
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha

I believe they do open the queue inside during the busier times like the summer, but I could be wrong.

Maybe Fastpass has a lot to do with not filling the inside. Where would they put the merge point...just keep it where it is? I would be furious if I had a Fastpass and had to wait in that long of a line after a merge.

That being said, I miss the cheesy videos they played in the queue.

I haven't seen the interior queues open since before the days of Fastpass. I think SWHorn's probably onto something. Since they fill both sides of the line when there are no Fastpass people coming in, if they filled those whole queues inside you could get to the front of the Fastpass line and still have a pretty long wait.

I really love the space music in the lines. Either line goes fast.

Change the Tomorrowland Transit Authority and make that Space Mountain: Mission 2!

Just kidding, just kidding, but I'm not sure if I want to see the original ride disappear. However if these rumors are true, they better keep the same soundtrack!

Does anyone know if there are any plans to update the cars? The last time I rode it I had a bit of a neck problem since there are no head rests...

Both -sides- are always open, except in the very very leanest of times (which I don't think there are anymore  ), because one side is standby and one side is fastpass. We were talking about the whole extent of the 'people corrals' on either side being open. They usually only have you going up past the control center and then down one row of the queue inside, until you get to the cars nowadays. 'Back in the day' (I feel old), you used to have to wind your way through all the interior queue too. That was back when they had the inside tvs on too; I guess they don't need them on since you're not in the inside line as long anymore...
