I think it would be more than that since they would need to redesign the seats/cars so you could hear them (the seatbacks don't go all the way up), plus onboard power, etc.

My guess as to why they don't add it, the money.

Honestly, it wouldn't take much of a redesign. The cars have plenty of places where speakers could be added without having to do a major redesign.
But the bottom line is, as I said, and as you agree.... money.

I asked a EPCOT tech friend about this. He told me SM would need new cars to add sound. The cars they are using right now are much to small and a upgrade car would add several hundred pounds per car. It really is a weight issue.

Hmmmm... I respect what you're saying, but I gotta wonder about this tech guy. Seems to me like they just don't want to fool with it and are exagerating what it would take. But that's just me. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know as much (obviously) as the guys who deal with this stuff on a daily basis... but I'm still a little leery of Disney's excuses. But no big deal.... I just wish I had the opportunity to really delve into this stuff with the guys who make it happen... that would so totally rock.

I still think the "weight" answer is a cop-out answer. Because like I said, they did update the entire building with an entirely new track, so they could have made some adjustments to allow speakers in the cars.

I hope Universal continues biting into Disney's profits with Harry Potter, so Disney can stop half-arsing their parks and actually put some effort.

I hope Universal continues biting into Disney's profits with Harry Potter, so Disney can stop half-arsing their parks and actually put some effort.

They didn't replace the track. Disney didn't want the expense of upgrading the sound system. You do have to remember how short sighted that the Disney upper management can be!

Oh, I bet he read my post earlier about Space Mountain's track being replaced at Disneyland. The one where they dismantled the old track and built a better engineered replica in it's place so that the ride would be smoother, it sounds like a joke but apparently that's what happened during the long closure a few years ago.
