For those of you that have been on Sub for a while, you know I have a life long friend who is a tech at EPCOT futureworld. Last night we had a long talk about this string and he pointed out a very important fact about Innoventions.
It's not a venue about what's in the future, although there are some displays that do have that. It more a consumer expo. This is where Disney tries to get corporations to come in and show their top product line. Innoventions is more about showing the public what's out there right now. You know, kinda like, look if you had the money, this is where you could go with it.
Now, I disagree with this, but hey he's been there almost 19 years (most of it at Innoventions and futureworld). I agree with DisBeamer and a few other here, but my friend (let's just say) made a very strong point about how the public had a misconception about this venue.

I admit that there is almost nothing futuristic about Future World these days, but even if the "attraction" were specifically about products that are available now, they should at least be new products.

Seriously...Velcro? Invented in 1941? That Velcro?

Plastic?? Invented in the 19th Century...

Fire safety? Waste management? Product safety? Those aren't about commercial products either.

The main theme of the place seems to be "corporations who will pay us money to show stuff, regardless of what it is, that we can pretend is an attraction and not an advertisement".

Yes, but regardless of whether or not there is a misconception and what what that misconception is, Innoventions is still a waste. Knowing that it isn't supposed to be futuristic but rather a consumer expo does not want me to visit it anymore than I wanted to before. (And I know I'm not arguing with you, Jacca, and that you agree.)

I realize it's your friend speaking there so don't feel I'm arguing with you personally, but that doesn't really mesh with what's -in- Innoventions. If that's supposed to be the case as the company line, that's fine, and I really have no problem with it being a showcase of top of the line products. It doesn't need to be 'future tech'; actually most of the suggestions people have made in this thread are not future tech - they're cutting edge tech. That seems to be what your friend is saying the point of the pavilion is, and I think that's valid and reasonable.

The problem is that Velcro is not cutting edge tech. Plastics, not cutting edge tech. The way they test safety glass... I mean nothing on that list, with the possible exception of the Segways is particularly "If you had the money this is where you could go with it", y'know? I'm sure Velcro is the Velcro company's top of the line product but that shouldn't give them an 'in' to be an 'Innovention'.

If he's saying the public misconception is that it's not 'futuristic' in there, that's fine; maybe it is, I don't know. But it isn't the point we're making here, I don't think.

Innoventions: The Road to Tomorrow

Does anyone care to decipher this?
Ever since they added the subtitle, I've always wondered exactly what they meant by it...

The only thing I ever use Innoventions for is to get a quick break from the heat as I'm walking from Test Track to Soarin' (or vice versa). I think it kinda smells funny in there also...

I agree, I agree, I agree!
When I think of Disney doing something like this..Well I think of that first time going through the Que for SM in 75 when I was 15. It was the future,it was fantastic, It got me to go in the Navy and to college so I could be a part of it!I also feel it's got to be more.

Yes!! Yes!! Yes!!
It's got to be more!! He was just telling me what Disney's corporate idea is. I wish y'all could here what he thinks. You would hear someone who get's totally disillusioned! They have a hard time getting replacement lights!! I've got to repeat that...replacement lights
Yes VELCRO??? What's up with that???

[quote="WVParkfan"]I agree that Innoventions could certainly use some updating, but remember this: each and every day, someone is experiencing Walt Disney World for the first time. Every day someone is walking into Innoventions for the first time and finding it amazing.

I do not disagree w/your statement about first timers, but, if Innoventions stayed the way it was when it opened, it would be better than it is now. A lot of stuff left, i.e. the house of the future today, and nothing replaced it. They shouldn't have closed it w/o a plan for replacement.

And I do not mean to be critical of Disney, they are amazing and a lot of people on this site are hard on them. When something is changed, that's one thing, but when it just seems to be almost ignored, that's another. And I really struugle to see any "new" visitor walking out of Innoventions saying, "that was amazing".

And I know I keep harping on the house, but if they kept it, it could have been easily, quickly, and probably inexpensively updated. Replace the HD with Blu-Ray (and promote Disney movies!), update the furniture, etc. They could have kept a lot of it the same, i.e. the climbing wheel chair and the shower. Throw in some green stuff for the tree huggers and we are good to go!

I am glad to hear u can ride the Segway, I thought that was gone and have yet had a chance to ride one.

And green is good, and needed! So take it easy tree huggers, I was just kidding!

I doubt Disney will ever bring something back. change it...update it..sure...bring it back...i would actually have to say...never. I don't know of one thing they have brought back yet. i could be wrong.
