Walt vision was an ever changing city that was never stagnant. I feel there is never an old or new EPCOT, it's just evolving.
After reading this, my DW said BITE ME. She loves the old EPCOT.

I agree that Walt's idea of Epcot was an ever-changing "community of tomorrow". But, Walt's true idea of a community was never really established. Due to the obstacles in creating a city where people would live and work, they went with a park that would highlight and present everchanging ideas of tomorrow as well as histories of where we've come from, etc.
I still love Epcot, but don't like that some things have been changed just for the sake of change. Some things were "fixed" when they weren't even close to being "broken". But hey, at least the wand is coming down.

I believe I'm correct in saying that Disney sold it's interest in Celebration, or at least minimized their involvement. I'll look to see what I can find, but surely someone here knows more details if that's the case.

I would be interested to know about Disney and Celebration. It is true about EPCOT and what Walt wanted EPCOT to be.
All I can honestly say is: I am very happy EPCOT began as a theme park. If "Journey Into Imagination" hadn't been there my son might not have lived 5 years longer then the doctors predicted. He had a very bad childhood cancer and wasn't given long to live. On our Make-A-Wish trip Figment and Dreamfinder gave him that "little spark" to fight the cancer. Sok I am most grateful for the old EPCOT.

Re: "Old" EPCOT vs "New" EPCOT?
Almost completely "old." The idea of constant display of progress is often lost, and when it's not, it's hard to keep up with. Innoventions is a great idea that's just poorly executed at the moment. Still better than if they just kept communicore. Test Track is actually a pretty good piece of work, but, outside of that, they've lost alot of what Epcot still acts like it's meant to be.casrin wrote:Just wondered what peoples' preferences were. For instance, I'm listening to the "World of Motion" track right now, and while Test Track was fun... I really do prefer the slow-paced original attraction far better. I liked the story telling, the 30 minutes of air conditioning.
What do you all think? Old style Epcot attractions or those that have replaced them?
The Universe of Energy has almost no relevence anymore, when it's based around a topic that is EXTREMELY important today. Mission: Space is just about a complete abomination. It's a great ride design, but it's more akin to fantasy than progress the way it's presented, and it's an entire pavilion that's just a thrill ride. Not to mention it misses a very large portion of the Epcot audience. Alot of people can't take it, and it's not particularly thrilling for the rest of us. The Imagination Pavilion is wasted space and two lame attractions that really do nothing to reflect the (beautiful) pavilion's importance. Soarin' is an awesome attraction, but a touristy celebration of a state all the way on the other side of the country doesn't seem to fit with. . . anything. And the Seas has become a Magic Kingdom-style movie advertisement attraction that avoids alot of what once made it great and has many dormant tanks that once busstled with fascinating life. It hasn't completely lost focus like other areas, but it has damaged it's focus.
Then there's Wonders of Life. . .
Spaceship Earth could very much use an upgrade, I just hope it avoids the mistakes alot of the other areas in the park should. With Epcot, we should never be embracing the old. Things should be new, ever-changing and exciting. However, they're starting to put in more and more relatively permanent things that have little cohesion or purpose. I WANT to like the "new" at Epcot. I don't want the old attractions back at all. I just want the old focus back.

Howdy Mansion Butler,
What a great post! Thank you for all the information about EPCOT. I haven't been to EPCOT in a few years. Reading your post I think it best if I didn't go to EPCOT. I don't ride the 'fast' rides. And, I've seen the new Journey Into Imagination and won't go in there again. That ride needs to bring back Dreamfinder. Figment is the 'figment' of his imagination. I won't get started about that.
Thanks again for the great post!!

You should probably still go there if you can. Epcot's not about the individual attractions.nancynohorse wrote:Howdy Mansion Butler,

Even though the rides have changed, I still love the atmosphere of EPCOT, and pretty much everyone has been mentioning the Future World rides, but what about World Showcase? The atmosphere there is still great and at least the movies will be getting updated so it won't feel like the 80s when we watch those films (still waiting on Norway's update, Canadas should be soon).
I was a big fan of the old EPCOT as a young child but now that it's gone, I try not to worry about it too much. I'm just hoping the SSE rehab goes well.
