Get your bearings.
I love to check into the hotel, then either drive around again or ride the transportation all around to take it all in. Riding the boats & monorails is a great way to see it all without actually going into a park the first night. Afterwards a swim and some relaxing, then a great dinner and back to the hotel for that ice-cold air conditioning ahhhhh.
...And it rained, and rained, and rained. The Deluge...

I don't know how I forgot this -- since the kids are older, our first meal at WDW is now at Boma, not Chef Mickey's (old habits die hard). It's hard to beat a trip to AK Lodge as a way to get into the Disney magic.

1st thing at DL
We walk down main street to the hub and sit in the middle and listen to all the music and smell all the smells and dream of what our vacation is gonna be. Then we grab fast passes for everything we can and go like crazy all day on the rides. We always hit Jumpin Jivin' on weekend night.

The last several times my wife and I have been, we have always gone to Downtown Disney on the first night. Sometimes we eat at the Rainforest Cafe, sometimes we will go somewhere off the property and eat. But we always hit the shops around DD. To me, it's a great way to get immersed into the WDW atmosphere without wasting a day of my park tickets.
