So...I decided to sign up for the 2008 WDW Half Marathon. I had never in my life run more than 9 miles at once...so this was a big deal. I told myself I would either get in shape and have the time of my life or I would die. Obviously I ended up back in shape and I inspired my parents and sister to run the 2009 WDW Half with me that next January.

I really am hoping I can run the 2012 FULL Marathon because that would be a great accomplishment for me. My dad ran marathons when I was younger and so that would mean a lot to me. He's 7 weeks past his last cancer treatment and is still working on regaining his strength. If he can go through all of his treatments...I can put up with 26.2 miles. Just gotta hit the pavement...and save up the $$$.
That's very inspiring BIG. I hope your Dad continues gaining his strength back and that you can make your full marathon next year :D

Congrats to everyone who ran this year and best of luck to everyone who is inspired to begin training for next year. This was my first half marathon and I had a blast! I am already counting down the days until registration opens in March for next years event. My plan is to do the half again next year unless I become overly ambitious and start having visions of the full 26.2. I really wish my wife would be inspired to train for the 5K and one or both of my college age sons would run the half with me, but even if that doesn't happen I am already looking ahead to 2012.
Good luck to all who are training and don't give up.

NaCler wrote:SUCCESS!!! I finished the first night of training and didn't pass out, suffer any injuries or worse... The first week has you alternating between jogging and walking at different intervals for 30 minutes. It gets harder, of course, but I was very happy with my results last night.
I hope you are running safely on the roads. I had two runners this morning, running on the correct side of the road but in the middle of my lane! They were running side by side and made no attempt at getting over or at least into single file. With the buildup of snow and slush and ice in the middle of the road I didn't feel it was very safe passing them but I did my best and didn't smush either of them. Then a few miles later, there was a single walker, also on the proper side of the road. He was at least on the side of the road, I slowed and moved all the way over for him and he waved his appreciation, as he did to the other cars who did the same. Smart and polite will get you far in this world Mr. Walker :D ~ arrogant and stubborn might get you squished Mr. and Mrs. Runner :( I'm sure you and the missus are smart trainers though NaCler ;)

Please remember that all in cases pedestrians do have the right of way over vehicles (at least that's what they drummed in our heads back in Driver Ed)...

Oh, and I totally agree that walkers, runners, bicyclists, equestrians have equal share of the road, I just get mad when they act like they own it. I am a biker and I adhere to the rules of the road, right down to stopping at four way stop signs, even if there is no traffic. I wouldn't blow through a stop sign in my car so I don't blow through them on my bike, but I see plenty of bikers who do. And just like cars don't drive side by side on the road, at least while they would be sharing one lane, I don't think runners (or bikers) should either. Plus, I would just think they would take a little more concern for their safety, especially when the roads are slippery. That's all...

Some people get total oblivious to their surroundings when they're doing certain things. Just like at the theme-parks, there are some visitors that totally ignore the disabled in their wheelchairs, stand talking in the middle of a busy walk area, or walk side-by-side-by-side-et al when they're passing through a narrow area that has bidirectional traffic. Unfortunately, some people are just inconsiderate or oblivious, but on the roadway it's more dangerous as they are creating an unsafe situation for themselves and others (a.k.a., "contributory negligence" in their own accidents).

Only another Doctor Who fan would know where that quote came from - Don't Blink!

The Avatar came from the Doctor Who website, they have several!

Way to go NaCler and Big! I am planning to be back for the 2012 Marathon. DW and I have signed up for the Mercedes half marathon next month, are probably going to do the Talladega half marathon the month after, and that will qualify us for the "Half Maniac" club. (can y'all tell what state I'm from)

DW's running friends - a shout-out to Team Peacock 8-) - still remind me that I said I would never do this. I only have one problem. My friend started the "Couch to 5K" and lost 70 pounds! I haven't lost an ounce :x . Maybe the problem is input. I am always starved after a race, or a training run, or when thinking about Disney...

I was going to do the Mercedes Half...but didn't get a chance to do any training. I ran it last year and loved it though. Not sure I could do the Talladega Half though...no way I could run around a NASCAR track that many times. Hopefully DW and I will get down to Orlando for the 2012 race in January though!

Should have posted this sooner. Work, and a second trip to WDW , has kept me busy.
2012......... :? ..........maybee. :?
The cheapest I can do it for is around the $2000 mark.
Thats economy flights, an All Star room and race entry. It doesn't include food or park tickets. :o
It's an expensive week at WDW.
$667 per medal if I do the Goofy again. Or $400 per medal if I also do the 5K on the Friday

Congrats again Joe ~ that is an awesome accomplishment. I'm sure you are proudest of the Goofy for what you had to go through to earn it, but I really love the Mickey marathon medal :D

2012 here we come! My wife and I (and sis-in-law) have decided that we are running the half marathon. My wife ran it in 2007 and my sis-in-law has run it multiple times.
We began running as a way to lose some weight and so far we have lost 90lbs. combined. I am using the half marathon as a way to get my wife to agree to another WDW trip ;)

Just kidding--I am very serious about completing this thing.
See all you 2012'ers there!

Thanks and probably only Son #2...If you recall from my trip report that Son #1 says he's done with Disney. He still says he isn't coming with us...we'll see.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. I bet by the time the marathon rolls around, he'll be ready to go. Any chance you could convince him to train for the marathon with y'all? That might make it more fun for him to go...
