I have to second on the clean air thing. Two problems in AZ is the population is exploding and polution is rising.... and we have no trees to scrub our air... :( I myself have never been to WDW. But I have been to the area before for business trips and it is much cleaner air.

I thought I had read years ago it was banana cream. Perhaps not. That's what it smells like to me, though. I've never smelled an apple pie like that.

Ok, so I just did some research, and it is indeed apple pie, here are some articles.
http://www.wdwmagic.com/philharmagic.htm

and here is a psot from another message board.

If you're interested in the WDW scents, someone has recently posted a question on All Ears...

Jennifer writes:

I love your column! If anyone has the answer to this, I know you will! My question is about the scents in Mickey's PhilharMagic. I love the scent of the apple pie! Is there anywhere in the park or on Disney property that room fragrances or fresheners can be purchased with these scents?

Hi Jennifer!

The apple pie scent used in Mickey's PhilharMagic is a custom-made scent, and is not available for sale to guests. You can, however, buy a reasonable facsimile from the Yankee Candle Company. This company makes at least three scents that are close to the pie scent: Macintosh, Farmhouse Apple and Home Sweet Home. Yankee Candle has many stores in local malls, plus an online store. Happy shopping!

Just for fun, here are some of the other WDW rides, locations and attractions which use scent-emitting devices to set the mood:

Main Street, USA (Bet you thought that baking and candy scent was real! Only part of it is.)
Soarin'
Ellen's Energy Adventure
Journey into Imagination
Spaceship Earth
It's Tough to Be a Bug
Kali River Rapids
Stitch's Great Escape

*giggle* Yankee Candle should start selling a "Corn Dog Burp" candle. It'd be a hit!

My nose must be out of whack. I do have sinus problems up the wazoo, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I never would have thought that was an apple pie! LOL!

On EEA you can smell all of the mist and kinda the same burning smell while going through the Dinosaur part of the ride. Also kinda a sulfer smell.

I thought they shut down all the smellitizers on the Energy attraction.

My favorite horribly-designed web site dedicated to the Universe states:
Unfortunately, during the 1996 rehab, the Smellitzers were deactivated, dismantled and permanently removed from the diorama. Disney management claims this was done after receiving many complaints from guests with allergies to molds, spores and fungi, that the Eau de Swamp and Damp Earth scents caused them to nearly panic, fearing that what they smelled was real and would subsequently cause a serious allergic reaction. Others speculate that this was merely an excuse used by Disney management to perform a cost-cutting measure in the way of maintenance, as well as eliminating the need to purchase the bottled scents.
He does mention that you can still catch a whiff of these old smells, which have soaked into the scenery.

They also have a photo of the Horizons orange smellitizer, which isn't really all that interesting, unless you're a total nerd.

Interesting...thanks for the info. I'll have to make sure I blow my nose before I go on all of these attractions...and maybe bring some Claritin to make sure I don't miss anything!

Well, I was just on the attraction 3 weeks ago, and they still were smelling to me. If you go to a park within a 10 year span you may know this for yourself, and not have to rely on people's articles.

Perhaps they have toned them down, because I do still smell them when I ride, but not as strongly as I remember them being in the past. Of course it could just be sensory memory and I am not really smelling them at all. I just hope they never get rid of the smell of Rome burning, can't beat that smell.
