Lion Sleeps Tonight wrote:I didn't even know they had pizza anywhere else at WDW. I just wanted to try Pizza Planet because I'm always nearby the restaurant. I wouldn't put that place as a must-do either.

So the other night I was chatting with a roommate, waiting for our laundry to dry. We were sitting outside the laundry room on the sidewalk. Soon one of those little security carts comes along and parks right in front of us. One guys asks us if we seen a girl dressed all ragged wearing an orange hat. We say no, and ask what's up. It turns out some junkie girl got into Chatham and has been asking for money and or drugs about a week ago. This makes sense because as I was walking home the other day from Publix I noticed some people with flashlights searching in a field near Mickey's Retreat. Weird times.

On a totally different note -Last night my roommate and I ate at Le Cellier at Epcot. It was on a whim because we just wanted a nice sit-down restaurant after doing really nothing all day long. Actually we wanted San Angel Inn at Mexico, but it was all booked. Most things were booked(note to self: make reservations at least 2 days in advance), and we ended up in Canada.

I ordered the 7oz Filet Mignon, with the bbq sauce and mashed potatoes. I also got a Ice Wine Martini- which was good, if a little too sweet. My roommate ordered the Le Cellier Mushroon Filet Mignon atop a small layer of risotto. To accompany it, my roommate also got a glass of Jackson-Triggs Merlot, Okanagan 03'. If it sounds like I have the menu with me, I do. The food was really delicious, and everything went well together. But it's not like we know anything about cuts of meat. For dessert I got the creme brulee- so so good.

One thing to note is the bread you get as an appetizer. Besides the usual bread, you get fresh pretzel bread. It was straight out of the oven, and it was the best pretzel anything I've ever had...better than the sweet cream cheese pretzel at MK, maybe.

Oh and today was the first day I experienced a fellow co-worker really upset. He was angry because after the rain, no one assigned to work in the same area as he was in, helped out with wiping off the benches, pushing standing water etc...He was going off on how we was alone doing all the work for an hour, with no one else in sight.

Here's a little story of exaggeration. The other day I'm doing restrooms and I'm almost done with my shift. I just had one more restroom to check and then I was out of there. So as I'm walking to said restroom, a co-worker, who's doing Sweep looks a little upset and asks me if I was doing Front Set restrooms, I replied yes. So he tells me that the guest restroom near the ABC Theatre is all messed up and I should check it. I replied that I was on the way there. So I go there, and the closer who is about to take over for me sees me, and doesn't even acknowledge me, just giving me the cold shoulder. So I walk into the closet with all the supplies and see two other co-workers inside talking. One asks me if I was doing Front Set, and I said yes, and then he tells me the closer is all mad because I wasn't doing my job. So I get a little upset because I know I was in that same restroom not even too long ago. So I go in and take a look, prepared to face the after effects of people tornadoes. There's hardly any mess! Granted it was a little messy, but for the love of Goofy, I've seen much much worse. So I walk back to the closet and tell the two co-workers that it doesn't even look bad, and that that one closer was so exaggerating. The guy tells me not to worry about it and just forget it because it's not worth getting upset about. I'm like "whatever, I don't care". I clean as much as I can and leave, a little miffed about the whole non-ordeal. It's like one minute someone is all nice to you, but then the next they'll bite your head off if they could.

Long story short- people get upset at the stupidest things and drama is just a part of daily life- at home and at work. If you do your job correctly, and you know you do, then more power to you. Don't let other co-workers get to you. Also people need to get over themselves.

Le cellier (SP?) is awesome. My parents were just there on last Tuesday night..

Sorry to hear your getting dumbed on a little.. Chin up! You choose a very hard job when you could have gone easier. Your doing great!

I'm not expecting to come out of this program a totally different man or anything. So I'm not expecting a lot on this program but I am very interested in it and very much looking foward to it. I also understand that if I am not enjoying myself, I will move on.

I guess I could consider this my first real job too, i work at a Supermarket, and some weeks, I do work 40+ hours but it's just working the dairy section. I guess doing custodial work and also maintaining a good image will be a lot harder. It's funny, whenever I'm at my job now, I'm trying to give the best customer service to prepare myself for when I'm at Disney. And so far, Alot of customers have thanked me for the excellent job I've done so far

I'm a Information Systems major so I wonder what park I will be part of. Maybe EPCOT because of all the technological rides that they have there. Yes I do find myself also sitting on a bench, people watching. I love to just people watch and watch everyone walk by myself. On the program, I know I won't have to rush from ride to ride like I usually do during my vacation. I could just soak in the atmosphere since I would have 5 months to do it.

I also hope I dont get the Magic Kingdom either but I'm sure I'll be happy wherever they put me.

My mom has had a few questions for me that I'm not sure of the answers. After the rooming board taken out of your weekly paycheck. How much money do you normally have left? Especially for food, and other merchendise. How much of a discount do you get for food and merchendise? And is there a bank on the property that you cash your checks or do they actually pay you in Cash?

I'm not too sure what it's about, but my co-workers tell me it's pretty fun. They even got to ride Rockin Rollercoaster. Then after that it's a quick 4 hour tour doing Sweeps. Finally a day in the streets. I might even get a lanyard for pin trading."

"Speaking of pin trading; people can be so inconsiderate. One of my roommates told me that a little kid just pulled on their lanyard without saying anything. Also don't just stare- ask to see them."

I would recommend the hip lanyard as the cast pin lanyard. The pins won’t way you down as much. That kid must be very young or rude. Fortunately during my seven months on the program nobody did that to me. Warning: you will meet some completive adult guests for your rare lanyard pins. I’m one of them  .
My brother worked at the Disney MGM Studios and told me he got to ride Rockin Rollercoaster with the lights on during the training session.

If you want to work at EPCOT than I recommend that you ask for a position at EPCOT during your interview. Asking may not help but it will not hurt. Usually you will be place in an area where you are most needed from the jobs you checked off. If you recommend EPCOT and they need certain people in EPCOT (which they will because Disney needs people EVERYWHERE) it will help your chances. Note: a lot of people will be recommending places and jobs and it is impossible Disney to help everyone.

You automatically pay your rooming board before taxes and your rooming board price depends on if you have a one-bedroom apartment to a four-bedroom apartment. The Disney merchandise is 20% off except during the holidays where it is 40% off. Many other stores have discount merchandise but the discount varies between stores. Disney offers many sales to cast members such as the semi-annual SALSAL sale and property control is a great place to get cheap merchandise. Some of the restaurants and Quick food places offer various discounts so ask first. Unfortunately supermarkets don't offer any Disney discounts (at least to my knowledge). Finally even if you are not on Disney property or a Disney associated store you could still get discounts for being a Disney cast member so always ask and check the discount book.

You get paid $6.25 an hour. Let's pretend you worked 40 hours (dang one more hour and you got overtime pay), 6.25*40 is 250, first take away $79 for room boarding (I just choused this as a example), now you have $171, than take away feudal taxes (Note: not state unless you originally live in Florida, also note the state tax will hit you after the college program  ), and whatever is left is yours. Disney has there own bank for cast members called Vista which you can use to automatically send your money to an account or you can pick up your check at your work location's pay area (out of all of this I forgot what it is called  ).

I have two questions: one I forgot how you quote with the box and second I am now doing am report about the area in which I worked in (which is Downtown Disney). I forgot who is the vice president of Downtown Disney and I will be very grateful if I was given any information about Downtown Disney that has changed within the time frame of January to today.

Here is the E-Mail I sent to the Assistant to the Dean, who is in charge with the Internships at Rhode Island College. I think it's just B-S.....Anyone wanna help me respond to this lady to the questions that she asked me:

Derek, I spoke with the Dean about your interest in Disney. There are two issues. The first is: You need to write a short proposal to me on how this would coincide with your major of CIS. I have looked at the website link that you have included and I am not seeing any connection. Please include how many hours and weeks you would be working and who you would be directly reporting to.

Secondly, when a student does the internship at Rhode Island College, they must attend the internship course simultaneously to get credit. This would be impossible due to the traveling difference. We must also resolve that issue. First we would like to look at some major related proposal.

Thank you,

Lori A. Martin, MS

Here is my respone back: (in case anyone is interested)

Dear Professor Martin,

After further review, I realized that calling this an internship was a mistake. I believe that I would like to attend the Disney College Program as a learning experience. I was wondering if I would be able to get school credit if I were to take some classes down there, while working at the same time and still be able to graduate in the Spring of 2008. I would have finished all my requirements at Rhode Island College. I would just be taking more classes at a different location for my last semester. I'm not sure that you would be in charge with the transfering of credits from the Disney College Program to RIC but I just thought I would run it by you and if you could give me some feedback and/or help.

Thank you,

Any feedback from anyone on this board would be appreciated

Yeah pretty much what AngelJ said. About where to get discounts and stuff, you learn all about it during Traditions and you get a handy-dandy booklet that tells you where to get them at. That reminds me, my friends are coming down in the middle of April, so I gotta look into Resort discounts. I believe it's 40% if you book. 50% if you book and stay there.

About the expectations, yeah I didn't have high expectations, so I wasn't let down, lol. Some things were better than I expected and worse that I expected.

During my interview, I might have mentioned it would be cool to work at Disney MGM. To work at Epcot would have been my first choice.

Perhaps you can list a class or two that you may want to attend at Disney U. If you explain it to the Professor, then it might help her see that it's not wasted time. The classes are taught by professionals of the business world. There is that "marketing you" class that's designed to help you get out there and network for future internships and job possibilities.

My major dept. also has an internship class, but I knew from the start I wouldn't get credit for it. I wonder how in depth the Professor looked at the website. Have her call the number on this page http://www.wdwcollegeprogram.com/sap/it ... grams.html

It's up to the dean of the major to decide, but if you spin it right... Or if you just want the experience, see if you can take a semester off, and still be able to register when you get back.

Sorry this post doesn't have all the answers, but I'm rooting for you. I have to really hand it to you for doing all this.

I think now we get paid $6.40. Unless you're a character or in quick service I think. After doing my shopping, I have probably half of my paycheck left, which is a measly $60 usually. Doesn't that bite? Well if I was here for the money, then...well I wouldn't be here. Today my manager said that she filled out a questionaire about salaries, and commented/proposed whatever that unfortunately us CPs do full-time work but don't get paid full time wages.

It's my day off tomorrow, so maybe I'll post more later.

packwingfn, I would tell them that college is more than just learning the curriculum. It's about getting the right people skills as well. Working for the Walt Disney Company, one of the largest media companies in the world, will introduce you to the corporate world (a world that someone with a CIS degree can likely find themselves) and will give you the necessary networking and group skills that you'll need after you graduate college.

QuickGold is right, packwingfn. You really want to do this, so don't give it up because some people in charge don't think it's a good idea. If you follow the path of everyone else even though you want to try something different, how will that get you anywhere? Do what you know is right for you! Stay strong, we're all pullin' for you.
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. Don't worry Esmeralda, I'm not giving up. I am still trying, I am still waiting for a response from Professor Martin but since she is the assistant to the Dean, I'm sure she has a lot of e-mails so I expect a week's response. That is why I'm planning this far in advance so problems happening such as this won't cancel my plans.

More to come later.....I have to go study for my exam.

Yeah- never give up. That sounds so cliche, but hey it's the truth. Even the full-timers here will tell you that. This whole thing can also be mentioned in your interview. It shows your persistence of willing to go the extra mile for something you truly want.

My roommate is leaving in two weeks, permanently. I wonder if I'll get my own room until the program ends. That would be cool. It'll be a little sad to see them go, but mostly it'll be a sigh of relief(and a time for rejoicing)I mean, my roommate hardly ever really engaged in our outings, and never genuinely seemed interested anything else besides their own life. Your experience out here is what you make of it.

So yeah, when you get down here- don't be a snob! Don't be self-absorbed but try and be friends with your roomies! They're your family here. If it gets really bad, then move, or go to councelling.

Everytime I have the day off, I feel like doing nothing. So that's what exactly I'm doing today. Woke up late, sat around went online here and now am waiting for some friends to come over so we can go to Mickeys Retreat for awhile.

The weather has been so nice for the past few days it makes me lazy and sleepy. I've been yawning on the job, and sneezing due to allergies. I think it's the pollen or grass. Not sure why it's necessary to cut the grass everyday!

ESPN weekend is this friday-sunday. At the Studios the ABC Theatre is all set up for use. Right in front of the Icon hat, there's a huge stage for interviews with famous athletes. I haven't experienced an ESPN weekend, but I'm sure it's crazy. I get to work that. Yay  I'm sure it's not as bad as the *shudder* cheerleaders. Cast members get a preview of it all tomorrow- but i'm working. I think there's games and other sports stuff we can do before all the guests.

Haha. I'll be working, so unless the players want to sign my action plan....

Tomorrow night after work a few friends and I are eating at the San Angel Inn at the Mexico Pavillion. I've heard good things about the food there and can't wait to try it. This restaurant was/is definitely on my "to-do" list. I lost that list, btw. The atmosphere looks so nice and reminds me a bit of the Blue Bayou in New Orleans Square at DLR. But before that....

...I work from 7am till 5:30pm. I'll have to catch the bus at 6:15am to get to work at 6:45. Yay me. It'll be a long day, but at least I'm in the Streets and staring open mouthed at people not washing hands or even trying to flush.

You know what's worst than a guest leaving the restroom without washing their hands? A cast member who does that. So many times I've seen cast members just walk out of restroom without turning on the faucet. Disgusting.

A few days ago, I realized that I'm halfway done with the program. It's a sad thought, but time flies when you're...busy and having fun. It just feels like I got here, but at the same time it feels like I've been here for much longer than it has. I'm still learning little tidbits about my job halfway through. It'll be really sad to leave this place, and especially to say goodbye to friends and co-workers. It'll be hardest to say goodbye to my roommates(most anyway). Hopefully we'll keep in touch and someday meet up again.

I probably won't extend because I think this is enough. If my friends and roomies all leave, it definitely won't be the same. I'll have to get used to new people all over again. Also, I miss my peeps at home. A few of my friends are coming down to visit, but some key people are missing.

Just a thought: there's never been a time when all six roommates have been in the same room together. We've never gone out or just talked all six of us. Weird.

Anyways, i gotta get up in 4 hours, so nite ya'll!!

Lion . . . still lovin' your mini CP reports. Keep 'em coming, and thanks for taking the time to post your experience for all us fans! I can believe you 1/2 way through the program either - 2-1/2 months does fly fast, doesn't it?!

Enjoy the other 1/2 of your time.

Day two of ESPN weekend is over. Today the park wasn't as crowded as I thought it would be. I was working the front set restrooms which includes the Icon restroom, so it was pretty close to the activities. Icon restroom is the one right on the side of the ABC theatre.

So today I heard a lot of the interviews and music from Mulch Sweat and Shears(sp?). I don't know a lot of the athletes, but I must admit I was little star-struck when I saw Jerry Rice, Karl Malone and Michelle Kwan.

In between cleaning the restrooms, I would hang out near the Icon hat stage. Other Showkeepers from the surrounding areas did the same, lol. My co-worker and I were just standing over to the side for a good 3 minutes watching and listening to the guests asking the athletes questions and our manager caught us, but he was cool about it. Tomorrow will be more of the same, and I'm sure I'll be in the same area. Not sure of the schedule with the athletes though.

As cast members we have to treat celebrities as we would any guest. We have to be professional and can't ask for autographs or approach them as a guest would. I mean, it would look totally lame if a Showkeeper asked a celebrity to sign his or her broom stick. Actually that would be cool. But anyways, even if we're star struck, we can't act it, and we gotta go about our normal business. This goes for backstage as well.

Also, there's this place near the Shed restrooms where celebrities go to. It's called The Hideaway- a fancy dining/socializing area(with nice restrooms with fancy toilet paper). We get to go in there and work the restrooms, but we have to have credentials to do it. So it's the full-timers who get those special full access passes("credential"). I almost got to go in The Hideaway because the normal person was MIA for a bit. But they showed up. Boo that. I did ask what it was like to go in the Hidaway, and my co-worker said it was weird because he didn't know any of the celebrities, and it was mostly their families.

A funny thing is that some guests lurk around the entrances to the Hideaway, waiting for the celebrities to go in and out...eh it's a visual thing. So if someone does open the gate, the guests huddle around and bombard whoever it is.

If you're on Sunset Blvd this weekend, be sure to be patient and thank the showkeepers there. Imagine having the ESPN sports activities, two of the most popular rides(ToT, Rockin'), Beauty and the Beast, Fantasmic, and millions of shops and places to eat all in your area. On the radio, I kept hearing "protein spill at____ and it would all be in the Sunset area.

One more day to go. Good night all.

Lion - it seems that on your last few reports, all they have you do is the restroom circuit. Do you ever get to to be on the trash duty anymore?
