As a matter of fact, elephants use sub-sonic (to humans) frequencies to communicate from one family group to another, sometimes over several miles. Now, I know that elephants are big and all, but I seriously doubt they put as much energy behind their low grumbles and other sounds as would be behind one of those very powerful signaling explosions. So, if you think about it, a lot of energy, plus low frequency sound / shock wave, = heard several miles, in this case a dozen or so, away. It's definitely plausible.
Yup, I know about lower frequencies and those sounds. Drives me nuts when the construction machines are rumbling around
I don't know if there are many people around here who aren't somewhat nerdy  ;) Being smart is cool!

I love being nerdy. So do my daughters. My husband and one of my best friends, though, make faces at me when I launch in to nerdish. When I see the expressions on their faces, I just pour it on all the more. But you know, it's really hard to hide enthusiasm for stuff that is so gosh darn cool.

13 miles isnt that far. if the wind and humidity are right, it's not impossible. You can hear thunder from miles away, try and google the question. found some sites stating that it is possible. plus throw a little pixie dust in and bingo....there you have it. :mickey: :goofy:

Rough estimates for straight line distances I would say you are closest to Sea World. MK would be over 10 miles away (straight line) plus add in the fact that the larger shells are launched from a location behind the park. It is still closer than US (IMO). However, you add in the factors that the larger shells are lower frequency, the relative humidity, wind direction and speed, obstacles between you and the origin and it could be possible. Definitely would need to get some clarification from members who live around the area like MadEye and Soarin.

Using thunder is a great idea to demonstrate how far sound travels. Something pretty cool and nerdy is to count the time difference between the thunder and lightning. When you see a lightning strike, you start timing. Every 5 second lapse between the thunder and lightning equals one mile of distance the lightning occurred at. For example, if you count 15 seconds between the lightning bolt and the roar of the thunder that would mean the lightning struck around 3 miles from your location.

Sorry I'm late to this one but it could very well be Wishes. When I lived in Davenport (12+ miles away), I could hear the fireworks from Wishes on certain nights so it isn't that far of a stretch.

All Star is just over 6 miles away and wishes can be very clear on some nights.
Arabian Nights is 11 miles away so why not.
Kissimmee airport is 12.

From Experience Artillery can be heard firing at over 15 miles and the subsequent explosions can be heard up to 30 miles.

How big are these fireworks :)

Specifically, in terms of TNT-mass equivalent, I don't know, but I bet this guy does:

BUT... I think the amount of powder in some of those big signaling shells at pyrotechnic shows rivals the explosive power of artillery shells.
