Get rid of the Hat or keep it?

Get rid of the Hat. It messes with the overall DHS movie vibe and ruins my perfect view of the Chinese Theater.

Keep the Hat. I never liked the Great Movie Ride all that much anyway.

The hat rumor sounds reasonable. And yes, Amy, TGMR needs a face lift terribly! They only thing they've done is add a few newer movies at the end of the ride when they show those clips. I can't remember the last time I saw a line for this attraction, at least not at the times of year we visit.

http://www.yesterland.com/removehat.html

Mentions the "royalty" issue several paragraphs in. Also says that it was an internet rumor so it's tough to decipher whether it is true or not.

It does mention that the hat was put up in the summer of 2001 to coincide with the celebration of Walt's 100th birthday that December. Much like the wand at Epcot, it just never came down after the celebration. They seem to think this is a more plausible explanation.

If it is, then I think they should take it down.

I think the explanation you provided seems more reasonable. Just laziness. Put it up, too lazy to take it down. Look how long it took to finally get rid of the wand over EPCOT...

As someone who worked at Epcot for several years, the wand was a lot more popular amongst the guests than the hat in Hollywood Studios. The debates about that wand lasted for years.

All I have to say on the topic is the hat is fugly!

I'm pretty sure the legal issues surrounding the Chinese Theater are an urban legend. I read somewhere that the hat, like the Epcot wand, was never meant to be a permanent structure. However, with no corporate sponsor to pay for its removal like Siemens did with the wand, it'll probably be there until it starts to age and the possibility of safety issues arise.

I don't think it's ugly - just misplaced. It's just wrong where it is. I would recommend moving it to somewhere else where it fits, like the animation courtyard or re-purpose as the entrance to Fantasmic. It served its purpose where it is now along time ago, just do something else with it now.

I kinda like the idea of moving to the entrance of Fantasmic...it would look nice there!

It would look really nice there, but I wonder about the amount of space that you have to work with there. I think the cost would be too high as it would involve some pretty major construction. Also would the hat interfere with the view of ToT from Sunset?

That's a great idea, although I agree with Len that the cost of tearing it down and moving it is keeping it in place. I was talking with an Imagineer in Feb. and they hate it, too. It's the Cinderella's castle cake of DHS.

I like the hat, just not it's location (the wand on the other hand never made much sense to me) :)

I like the hat, it's just in the wrong place. Find a more appropriate area for it, it doesn't fit the flavor near The Great Movie Ride.

I'm not alone! There has to be somewhere else to move it. I don't think it would be as tricky or costly as you think. The question is where could they put it?

MF, I love the idea of somewhere around the entrance to Fantasmic. It makes sense thematically, too.

Of course, they could use it to cover up the now-departed Backlot tour. Nothing like a set-piece lying around.

(btw, I like the new avatar. It brings back some memories I thought were lost in the cobwebs.)
