Also keep in mind that not every monorail is running on every day. I believe it is about 4 monorails to the EPCOT line, 3 on the Express, and 3 or 4 on the Local line. It is important for the system to have 12 trains so each monorail is able to have a day in the shop and allows for the rare occurance of one to break down. When Disney was running 10 they were really short and ran 3 a line for at least the first days following the incident. They needed a quick fix to get another train for the system and that was the creation of Teal. However, the system runs best and has been designed for them to rotate on 12 monorails. It is great to hear that the system will be complete once again.

I for one don't see the monorail system expanding for MANY years. I feel we could be seeing the current trains for many more years (10-12). Keep in mind that the control systems were upgraded in the mid 2000's. Also, I highly doubt the addition of a fifth gate will be anything that we see for a long time. The current plan, as stated above, is to build within the current parks and to refresh them. I would start looking for rumors of a fifth park to begin again when (if) Disney starts utilizing the vacant space in EPCOT.

The concrete and steel costs are too high to expand the monorail system. It's one of the major reasons many cities that have similar systems also are not currently expanding their systems as well. The economy is not strong to add a fifth gate either at this time (the credit markets are not back to being strong enough that Disney could float that kind of debt without incurring some heavy interest costs to do so), so as Len90 says Disney's current strategy will more like be renovating their current parks with lower capital costs & financing costs.

I didn't realize they shift the Monorails around that much. Thanks for the info. all. Hopefully we will be going to WDW in Dec. and hopefully we will be able to ride Monorail Maroon!

I like the idea of honoring Austin. Honestly, I didn't realize there were 11 monorail trains and I would only be guessing the colors but this seems like positive news!

Here they are in no particular order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Lime, Green, Coral (currently as Tron), Teal, Blue, Black, Gold and Silver. Retired colors: Pink and Purple.

Also remember that the monorail barn holds 9 trains with the 10th bay used as the painting bay. On any given night monorails will left out either in front of the barn or at a station on the beam that they will run the next day. If the temperature drops below freezing, 10 sit in the shop (1 in the paint bay) and 2 in the Contemporary. No monorail will sit out two nights in a row due to nightly maintenance.

Actually, any Monorails that are not in shop are never left in front of the shop (never stop a Monorail on a switch, it is a very strict rule and there are a lot of them in front of shop). Most of the time it is either Contemporary or TTC. It is rare but they will leave one at MK station sometimes.

Looking back, you are correct about that. I thought the pictures I had seen had a monorail sitting fully outside. It is in fact only partially outside. During the collision the monorails were left at the nearest station with I believe the express trains already making it back to the shop. Lime was at the GF and I believe Red was at the Poly and Black was at the MK station. They also will always leave one set of doors on each car partially open to ensure that if somebody was on the monorail, they are not locked in it.

I bought this shirt when I saw it at the Bou-Tiki in '07! I get strange looks from people, but then there will be a Disney person every now and again that will get it!

You can buy it online now, it's one of the "park" items they sell through the Disney Store now! I ordered one for my cousin's birthday back in April!
