We went in August of '07 with friends of ours and stayed at Riverside. It wasn't so much crowded as it was hotter than anything. Water is essential. Big thing we did was hit the parks early, sat by the pool all afternoon and when it started to cool off a bit we would venture back out.
Hey... you never know.

That's around the time we used to go. Be prepared for really humid/hot weather, and a LOT of rain (WDW always seems to get that daily 20 minute flash T-storm around 2pm, but in August it always seemed the flash storms lasted for hours).

One year we went to Universal (at least I think it was UO) and it was POURING at park open when we got there. There was literally like maybe 20 other families in the park and the local news interviewed us as we walked in with our ponchos about basically why we were so crazy to be at the park that day.

August is pretty crowded start to finish in my experience.
