Only stayed at FW one time and that was my first visit to WDW when I was still in junior high school...seems like a million years ago! What I remember best was riding the railroad...I thought that was the neatest thing.
My husband has always wanted to stay there and we always think about it but end up somewhere else.

I love alot of the resorts for certain reasons. The Fort wilderness is one of them. I think its one of my three favorite resorts of all time!

Hi Folks,
I'm currently writing a new book on the four "steel rail" railroads at Walt Disney World. One of them is of course the FTW RR!
If anyone has any photos of the railroad and/or willing to share any stories about riding the railroad, I would really like to hear from you. I'm being careful about permission and credit, so anything used would be fully credited to you....
Thanks!
David

I would love to stay at Fort Wilderness at least once. It seems like it could be a nice play to stay with the family, or even if you want a romantic weekend with your spouse. Those pictures are pretty good and shows the beauty that the resort has. In those pictures, you couldn't really tell that you are anywhere near Walt Disney World which must made Fort Wilderness a great place to visit at least once if you need to relax from all the sun and relaxing. I would prefer to stay there in February/March when it isn't too hot (and it isn't hurricane season!)
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha

JPG - thanks so much for posting those pics...it takes me right back to my days staying at FW. That shot of the Meadow Trading Post is gorgeous!JPG wrote:We consider Fort Wilderness our second home! Happy place!!

Yep Caroline, I made it myself. And believe me, if I can do it, anybody can, LOL!!! Got all the parts and materials at Home Depot. Not very hard at all.DisBeamer wrote:JPG, those are great pics. Is that Mickey street light one you made yourself? I've read about those on the dis camping board.
They have become popular at the Fort the last few years for sure. Some folks even put color changing bulbs in them and they look really neat at night. We enjoy putting ours right at the end of our site...It lights the way for us as we come "home" each night.
Oh, and thanks everybody for the nice complements on the photos. I really enjoy taking lots of pictures when I am at WDW...You know, I am the goofy guy taking pictures of trash cans, buildings, man hole covers and such!!! LOL!!!

That's really cool. Next time I'm in WDW, I need to make a point of looking around FW at night (erm ... if I can think of a non-creepy way to do that). We were planning to stay there in October but that's not going to work out.
I wish I had a lawn. I'd so have a Mickey Light out there.

Before the days of the digital camera, my pictures used to come back from being developed with these little 'helpful hints' on them for 'taking good vacation pictures'. Apparently the developing people didn't see the interest in my pictures of fence posts and emptied out Rivers of America. Tch. Their loss.JPG wrote:I really enjoy taking lots of pictures when I am at WDW...You know, I am the goofy guy taking pictures of trash cans, buildings, man hole covers and such!!! LOL!!

I finally was able to experience Fort Wilderness on my last trip as my friend Jess & I toured the place. She's been there plenty of times with her family in her camper so she was able to show me around and explain all the different areas. Her friend Ashley also works the stables so that was cool checking that area out too. Then we ended up eating at Trails End for Lunch and followed that by taking the speed boat for an hour on Bay Lake & Seven Seas. I had soooo much fun and it was good to explore Bay Lake. I feel like I know that lake now. I finally was able to check out the former River Country & Discovery Island which was real sad ;( but it didn't ruin my time on the lake.
It just sucked cus my boat wasn't going as fast as Jess's boat until I restarted it then i was finally able to experience the true speed of the boat! Hopefully she'll post pictures of that trip someday...Once she does, I'll post them here.

I don't think they're the same, though. For instance, I haven't heard of any characters making an appearance.Peerless83 wrote:I think the Grand Floridian just started doing the sing a longs as well
I know it's out of the way for those of us without a car, but the campfire/sing-along is something we go out of the way for every trip. The kids love it, and it's a wonderful hidden gem of Disney. It's especially good after going to Hoop for dinner.
