I didn't know Google Earth could do that.
And ericpabear? Before you say that, take a look at the Magical Racing Tour game. The opening sequence was a camera trip down Main Street - and this looks PRETTY DANG AMAZING compared to that. The PS3 would have a fairly difficult time doing something this well (though admittedly, it WOULD have shadows).

I checked out Google Earth when it first came out. I still think it looks like a game.

I absolutely love the 3d buildings in Earth. When it first came out I upgraded our laptop to have 3gb of RAM in it partly because Earth ran so slowly with the WDW 3D buildings turned on. I find it a great way of reliving happy memories.
1980, 2000, 2005 and 2008 all had plenty of magic. Hoping for a bit more in 2010.

I think it's really neat. I couldn't figure out how to work it (I'm usually pretty good with computer stuff) My 9 year old showed me how to use it! I just wish the parks were that empty when we're actually there!

Ok, work was a little slow so I went on Google Earth to do a little walking around the World (so to speak). Ok, so work wasn't that slow but our trip is 2 weeks away and wanted to get geared up a little.

I found that "ruler" function in the tool that lets you measure distances from either a straight line, or create your own path throughout the property to track distances. I found some interesting results that may surprise you (it did to me):

We thought that walk from the entrance of AK to the Safari was hike and it turns out it's only .35 miles. To put in better perspective, it's only .30 miles from the entrance of MK to the Carousel. I think the scenery makes the illusion for me where MK has all the sights of Main Street that sort of keeps you busy not thinking of the distance vs. AK to the Safari has mostly pathways and shrubbery.

Anyway, thought it was a neat feature and wanted to pass on. When in Google Earth, it's the icon that looks like a ruler on the toolbar.

Some other distances:

A walk around the World Showcase 1.0 Miles
Epcot Main Entrance to United States .85 Miles
Beach Club Lobby to Fantasia Gardens .70 Miles

No, but sure does explain why my feet hurt for weeks after I get back.

After doing some exploring, I find it very funny that they 3-D'd the break room at Rock N Rollercoaster...

We use Google Earth 3 D to ramp up the excitement before our trips.

I tried a while ago, and I never could figure it out!

I may be returning later this weekend with questions.

Also, to derail for just a moment:
Magical Racing Tour game
I want a remake, dangit! I loved playing that game on both the Dreamcast and the PlayStation those long years ago. Ah well, here's hopin....

I tried this when it first came out and my computer was running slow but bearable. I found that it worked better when I made the window for the google software smaller.

I think this is a cool idea. I looked up the Wilderness Lodge and it looked awesome. Very nice.

Yeah, I have kinda figured it out, but I couldn't get inside the Imagination! building at Epcot- so you can't go inside the buildings? Or just not the rides? Or what?

I don't believe you're able to go inside buildings at all, wheter ride, show, or otherwise. Google Earth 3D is basically a 3D map program.

Awww, a shame. But I can understand why. It would not only be very hard to do but they don't want to ruin the rides. :)

Thanks though :)
