You have to remember people, and even kids just drop dead every day. I know I've posted this before, but with people under 40, the first sign of a heart problem is most often a sudden and fatal heart attack.

Yes the stress of a ride, could trigger it, but so could the stress of missing a bus or buying a house or taking a test. Now you are getting into the accualarals (sp?) of having the number of people on the property everyday you expect a few per week to just die.

I know it's not much consolation to the families. But my feeling is most injury/deaths at Disney, are either events that would/could have happened anywhere or people who are "special" and the posted warnings don't apply to them.

I understand why Disney settles out of court with these people, but from a moral stand point I wish they would press more of these cases.

I agree completely. On any given day WDW is like a small (or large depending on your perspective) city and just like in any other city or town, people die. It's going to happen and while my heart goes out to the families who have this happen while on vacation, you really can't blame Disney when they have done due diligence in posting signs and warnings everywhere. When it's your time it's your time whether you are riding a coaster or sitting on the couch at home.

I think that sums it up pretty well. I understand Disney settling to avoid having bad media attention, but in general I would say you can't blame Disney safety standards for heart attacks and the like; it really doesn't make much sense to.

In cases like the BTMR accident a few years back, it's a bit of a different story (I believe, though don't recall 100% for certain) that the conclusion of the investigation was that the ride was faulty and it should have been caught, as opposed to being a freak accident. Stuff like that, I think the families are definitely entitled to some compensation (more in the sense of it being punitive to the company). But heart attacks? If you know you have a condition and you ignore the warnings, then that's on you. If you don't know then, well, it's just one of those things.

As a (admittedly dark humor) aside: We'd been discussing this topic on our last trip, and the last time we rode Mission:Space my husband made a point of saying if he died, to make sure I told people it wasn't Disney's fault...

I have to agree with the statement:

I have a problem with Coasters and some other "thrill" rides, I pass out do to lack of blood flow to the brain, so I make it a point NOT to go on them. Trust me I'd LOVE to go on Splash Mountain but I can't and I know that, SO I DON'T. It doesn't matter what the peer pressure is I just don't go on them because I don't want to die. I went on a few rides in the past and gotten away with it, for instance Test Track (I guess it's because it really only accelerates as fast as I do in my car), Mission Space, almost didn't make it through that one, I got pretty sick afterwards.

If people don't want to die on a ride they should know their tolerances. Don't sue Disney for something that you were to stupid to realize despite all the warnings.

In my earlier post, I considered saying that If I had to go, I would want to "go happy." Might as well be at my laughing place: Walt Disney World. But, what a downer for my family! Yes, Life is for living and even though I have some small disabilities, I will continue going to WDW as much as time and finance will allow. I think if I died there, my family would continue to go there and remember what a wonderful time they used to have there with "Papa and Mema." I sincerely hope this man's family will feel the same way.

I agree with the posts above. So few of the Disney rides are really THRILL rides, relative to others. EE is intense, but its not THAT intense.

How very sad. Sometimes people know about these conditions, and sometimes they don't.
