I agree about the media. Anyone here on this board hear about the accident at Kings Dominion on their star attraction, The Volcano roller coaster that occurred last Friday? Thank God no one was killed, but quite a few people were injured and hospitalized.

Well on the one hand I will say it does add a level of accountability to parks. However; if you watch the CNN clip they really make it seem like Disney is a death trap, they seem to allude to it not being uncommon and cite the Mission: Space death an how Disney makes no comment etc. It's really sad really.Gizmata wrote: I just wish the media would stop beating down Disney parks to sell their papers. :\
No offense to anyone here, but I "lovingly" refer to CNN as the Communist News Network. In my opinion, they're quite biased on any report they do.Mr.ToadWildRider wrote:CNN clip they really make it seem like Disney is a death trap, they seem to allude to it not being uncommon and cite the Mission: Space death an how Disney makes no comment etc. It's really sad really.

Here is an update on RNR from the Orlando paper:
Disney Rock 'n' Roller Coaster re-opened when Disney-MGM Studios opened at 8 a.m. today, the company said in a prepared statement. "Walt Disney World engineers and ride system experts completed a thorough inspection of the attraction overnight and found it to be operating properly. A representative from the state Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection observed the ride inspection and testing," according to the statement. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Russell family during this difficult time and we continue to provide them with assistance."

Since we don't know what happened yet, we're all just speculating. But right now it doesn't seem like it was something Disney could have prevented. That said, ride accidents (and deaths conntected with rides) are not extraordinary. They happen around the world quite often. You're infinitely more likely to get injured on a carnival ride than on something at a major theme park. But like airline crashes vs those by private aircraft, they're all the more spectacular when a big name is involved.

Was that the same condition that the boy who died on Mission Space? I remember it was a heart failure in that case also.foldmama wrote:Just received a CNN Breaking News which reads:
Preliminary autopsy results found no injuries, but indicated congenital heart abnormalities in a 12-year-old boy who died after a Disney ride in Florida, according to a statement from the medical examiner’s office.
Please keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle until the ride comes to a full and complete stop. Thank you, and enjoy the rest of your day here at Walt Disney World.

Our prayers go out to the family! Here is what CNN is now reporting.
Autopsy: Boy who died after Disney ride had heart defect
Roller coaster reopens
Friday, June 30, 2006; Posted: 2:49 p.m. EDT (18:49 GMT)
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- The boy who collapsed and died after riding a Disney roller coaster ride may have had a congenital heart abnormality, according to preliminary autopsy findings released Friday.
"No evidence of injury was found, but congenital heart abnormalities were detected which will be further evaluated," the report from the District Nine Medical Examiner's office said. "The cause of death will be left pending until results of additional studies are obtained."
Michael Russell, 12, of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, collapsed after riding the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster ride at Disney-MGM theme park in Orlando, Florida, Thursday morning, Sgt. Carlos Torres said. (Watch the details of what happened after the roller coaster stopped -- 2:39)
Russell's father began administering CPR and was later aided by a Disney assistant, but the boy was not responsive. Russell was then transported by ambulance to Celebration Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A Disney representative was with the family Thursday afternoon and Disney officials were offering the boy's family their "deepest sympathies," according to a statement.
The Rock 'n' Roller Coaster re-opened Friday morning. "Walt Disney World engineers and ride system engineers completed a thorough inspection of the attraction overnight and found it to be operating properly," said Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty in a statement.
Disney boasts of the ride on its Web site, "Zoom from zero to 60 mph with the force of a supersonic F-14, take in high-speed loops and turns synchronized to a specially recorded Aerosmith soundtrack and zip through Tinseltown in the biggest, loudest limo you've ever seen."
It adds: "The 3,400-foot-long track is more than a half mile of sudden accelerations, dips, loops and twists and turns."
Children shorter than 4 feet are not permitted on the ride, according to the Web site.
The last death at a Disney resort was April 12, when 49-year-old Hiltrud Bluemel of Germany suffered a stroke linked to her high blood pressure after riding "Mission: Space" at the Epcot Center in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Five months before that, a 4-year-old boy died from an unknown heart condition on the same ride

Not surprised to learn that this kid had a medical condition. I am not sure how something like this doesn't come up in a physical - it's very sad and I hope they are able to find a peace that passes all understanding out of this tragedy and move on.

Actually, I was suspecting that this child may have had a heart condition. So sad. At least the child passed away doing something that he wanted to do in a place he LOVED! When I have a loved one pass again... (and I've had many actually)....I would want it to happen that way.... quick and happy....not a long drawn out and painful death. I send my prayers to the family...

Here is what the AP is reporting. It was in the paper here yesterday. Basically the same things that all the other sources listed have said, but this one adds the dramam that the father is an Iraq war veteran who took his kid to a park and tried to save his life after the kid felt weak. It also compares other parks around the area.
