Pirates of the Caribbean Pirate Captain Mistakes Contest
In the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, before the movie overlay, the pirate captain who is attacking the fort says "Stand by as your guns bear" and "Another broadside and he goes down with tide". While both of these phrases sound fairly nautical they are both technically incorrect. I will send a free Disney collector pin to the first Mouseketeer who comes up with the correct answer. Good luck!

I assume what he is looking for that ships are always "she" so you never hear a proper pirate say-purple figment wrote:What are we supposed to do? Are they football references?
"Another broadside and he goes down with tide"
(although I always thought the captain said "she")
I'm not sure about the first one. Sounds okay to me but then I'm not a navy buff. The only thing I would guess is that a ships weapons are not called "guns" although in land warfare, crew served weapons are "guns" individual weapons are either "rifles" or "pistols" but NEVER "guns."
Another good question, is name all the ropes on a ship. Most navy buffs will tell you it's a trick question there are no ropes on on a ship they are all "lines" But that is untrue, there are, I think, 3 ropes on a tall ship. Modern ships I believe all cordage in use is a line.

"Stand by as your guns bear" and "Another broadside and he goes down with tide"
I believe the order should be "Stand Ready. Fire as your guns come to bear."
As the ship is firing on the fortifications. You would have to fire a massive amount of broadsides to sink the fort
it is going nowhere with the tide.

Okay, I'll take a "shot" at this.
"Stand by as your guns bear" - would mean DON'T fire when your guns are aimed where they should be.
"Another broadside and he goes down with the tide" - would ground the target rather than sinking it.
I was never in the Navy, but I did fly seaplanes once upon a time, which qualifies my guesses if they are wrong!

Being a navy vet and having spent a good deal of my life on the water and open sea (the more out of sight of land the better), I'm still doing research. It's right a the tip of my mind. Sort of like trying to recall a dream. I'm going to give it a little more time. I know if I stop thinking about it, I'll know the answer.
It's a great question!
They're miss matched and topsy torvy, but close enough to throw you off. Sort of like a mixed metaphor. The answer is so close, maddening!!

Answers to Pirate Mistakes
Hello!
Alrigfht. here are the answers! I thought the first mistake was easy to guess. It is incorrect to say he'll "go down with the tide!" Tides are spoken of as going "in or out" not "up or down". The second mistake was a litlle trickier to get. The order "Fire as your guns bear" was given when your ship was moving against another, essentially meaning don't fire until you move in front of your target. Meaning your gun is bearing on the target. To give the order "stand by as your guns bear" really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Further, since the ship is not moving, I suppose the guns are already bearing on whatever is in range. A more appropriate order is probably "fire at will". Hope this clears things up.
