Being Italian, I think I need to set this straight.
The reason that the drink is bitter is because it is an appertif- which means that it is drank after a meal to help wash it down and just to have a nice finish to the meal.
There are alot of Italian drinks that do the same thing- a lot of them alcoholic- like the bitter apertif Campari, and the licorice tasting Sambuca.
actually, an
apertif is an alcoholic drink that is served BEFORE the meal, not after it. It's meant as a sort of "appetizer" to the meal, meant to stimulate the appetite, and is usually served with small finger foods (like crakers and cheeses).
now, a
degestif is a drink that is served AFTER the meal. those usually have a higher alcoholic content than apertifs, or are just heavier in nature.

it's shorthand. usually, D_ means Dear (or as boilerbabe said - Disney) _(family member)____. so basically:
DH - Dear Husband
DW - Dear Wife
DD - Dear Daughter
DS - Dear Son
as for the drink itself, while I agree that it's not the most pleasant taste, it is refreshing and really wakes up your taste buds (and yourself if you're not really ready for it) for the rest of the day...
