On our past trip I took a few envelopes and wrote "Mousekeeping" on it, they found it everyday!
And this was the first we've ever left a tip, we were clueless up until our last trip. I agree, everyone should do what they're comfortable with. When we haven't left a tip, we've still gotten great service.

Before we leave home, we get an envelope for each day of our stay and put $5 in each one.
When we are at the Disney hotels, we leave our stuffed animals (Mickey, Daisy, Stitch, or whatever) on our beds in the morning, and we put the envelope with them.
When we come back to the room in the evening, the Mousekeeper has usually done something fun with our stuffed animals (once, Stitch was climbing one of the lights over our bed!), or has made us towel dolls.
We don't leave the tip in order to have the animals arranged or to get the towel dolls, but it is certainly nice to know that the Mousekeepers appreciate the tip. And it's always fun to have Mickey in the window waiting for us, or to have Daisy on the bathroom vanity, using my wife's makeup, or to have a new towel doll.

Many, many years ago, during our first visit with my son, we purchased a few stuffed Disney characters for him. We left them in the room while we were in the parks. Upon returning to our room, we discovered the toys were arranged as if someone was playing with them. They were doing stuff like looking out the window. I thought some freak playing with my kids toy, goofing off. So the next day I hid them before we left. Later that evening, as we walked back to our room, I noticed a bunch of toys watch'n us from their rooms, as we pasted. Then the "Magic" hit me. I get it now, these toys were looking for their owners. Now I look for this little extra magic.
