Refurbs/Upgrades: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly . . .

Post by Chernabog » Aug Fri 29, 2008 10:10 am

On different forums different people have made many a snide remark in regard to upgradaing and/or refurbishing rides. While the intention is to always improve the ride, apparently most of you do not agree that is the outcome. So, my questions are:

What is your favorite refurb/upgrade?

What refurb/upgrade took away from the original ride/show?

Please pick (rate) your top one and bottom two:
The Good:
The Bad:
The Ugly:

The good: HM refurb at WDW. It has done nothing, but enhance the story of the ride. It is now very clear that its the story of a "black widow" bride who kills her husbands and we the rider fall/get pushed out an attic window and die.

The Bad: SSE refurb. It isn't the worst but it is far from the best. When did Disney decide that the guests are idiots? The script for the narration is aweful. I have heard more intelligent scripts about communication on Sesame Street. I appreciate the nod to Horizons at the end, however it is very, very campy.

Which leads me to...

The ugly: This is a tough one. I think the one I disliked the most was the Horizons to Mission:Space refurb. Yes, Horizons needed some work, after 17 years what doesn't need some updating, but to remove a groundbreaking attraction and replace it with an inferior attraction is tragic, whatever the reasons.

Good: Haunted Mansion- the fixing of the lights, the sound and the added room definitely is better than good, it's great

Bad: Spaceship Earth- What used to be my favorite attraction, is now just 'okay' to me. It's hardly inspiring anymore

Ugly: Tiki Room Under New Management- Disney, I will never forgive you

I've never been on the original Journey Into Imagination, so there is nothing to compare it to, but seriously, I cringe at the thought that some Disney official went on it, and said, "oh this is good" (same goes to Nemo)
"A pirate in irons be full o' guile.
And the blackest 'art wears the broadest smile."

Oh, and "Welcome Home."

These are going from what I've heard, since I've only been to WDW once :P

Good: WWTBAM -> Toy Story Midway Mania

Bad: Spaceship Earth

Ugly: Alien Encounter -> Stitch's Great Escape (I can't believe that noone's mentioned this yet!)

Keep in mind, I haven't been since early 2005.
The good: The Tower of Terror upgrades. Particularly v3 to v4. Surprised nobody has brought those up yet; some of the most amazing engineering in existence. That's what makes the WDW version so unique.
The bad: Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management. Yes, I will admit, I was initially psyched by the addition of Iago and Zazu (two of my favorite characters), but since the upgrade, my family has only been in that room TWICE. Way to ruin an awesome show. (Though, downright amazed by the number of SSE's here - I haven't been on the new one, is it really that bad?!?!)
The ugly: Andy wins this topic. And a cookie. And the internetz. All of them.

This is helpful to me though I've never been to WDW. Whenever I visit, I'll be sure to keep this in mind.

I haven't been there since 2005 and this list is bound to change after my next trip, but for now:

Good: PotC (saw all the new stuff out in DLR last year)

Bad: Journey Into Imagination - the current reincarnation is leaps and bounds above the horrid Journey Into YOUR Imagination, but it's still not as good as the original.

Ugly: Tiki Room Under New Management - Ugh, cannot stand this at all. Just horrible.
