I think attractions based on Disney movies is 1) smart from a marketing perspective but 2) crass from a originality perspective. For instance, Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a retelling of the movie story, where I would enjoy a new original story much more.
dont really think you can compare the two. a signifcant # of attractions re-tell the story (peter pan, pooh, splash mountain, snow white, lion king, etc). Alot of those attractions are well done as is little mermaid. its a combo of good story plus other things. E.g. the london scene in peter pan , the puppetery of little mermaid, the spectacle that is splash, the dances in lion king.
The issue with tiki room is simple. They had a decent attraction and didnt put much effort into updating it and then did the update poorly.

Yes, update would of been more suitable.mickster68 wrote:Why did they feel the need to update instead of rehab the room.
Love Tomorrowland and Adventureland, but hard to decide to which one is best.

Given the name of the newer version, I think it's time to fire those who fit the "Under New Management" description.

There are many reasons why the Tiki room show changeed in WDW and in Disneyland. There is some Synergy of movies and rides there always has been. most attractions are based on movies, even the old ones. Numbers probably show that if a place that have a movie characters that kids and adults like, they go there more often. I'm sure the numbers have increased with the addition of Nemo to the Living Seas. I agree its all become a bit overdone. But thats why we find Iago and Zazu in the w/Tiki birds. I don't care for the new show as much as the old show, mainly the music covers stink, WDW should have realized that without much moving and changing of sences that the music becomes more important to the level of entertainment. The old show has music for all ages and kinds of people. that why some think it so outdated 'cause some songs are for different people. It makes me happy to know that the original is still in Disneyland, and it will propbably remain because its fast becoming an historic site for Disneyland, being its one of the first attractions of its kind. But the one in Disney World is not historic. Walt Disney himself was not deeply involved like in the original. Disney also likes the attractions to be simular but a little different in every park, this way you feel like traveling to see them all. So not being historic and falling in numbers due to parks competion, and the idea of having a different Tiki Room for all to see, are some of the reasons I feel the ride was changed. What I don't understand is if one of the points of the old attraction was to show people some of the latest greatest technology available, with the audio-animatronics, advanced stereo sound, and computer capabilties. Than why not show off the computers ability to now run two shows, old one in the morning and the new one later, there's no costume change, and the new robots can stay out of site until affternoon. This way both types of fans are happy, people will want to see both shows, and getting the crowds twice is great for over park line control. This is something I wish I could see happen.
