you got caught with it at least once (maybe twice) when we went down, if I recall. in fact, you were telling me that you were wearing it still before we even got up to the security point...
Oh yeah! I forgot that, but I think it was only the EPCOT time, because I remember going back to the car and putting it back. I don't have to worry about that much anymore since I don't need the pouch I carry it in anymore. I used to carry the pouch without the leatherman for the flashlight, pen, paper, etc that is in it. Now I don't worry about it because I carry it all in my camera bag now. I think I forgot it because we weren't in a hotel we were at the campground, I guess because I feel I need it outdoors. :?

Esmeralda wrote:Edit: How did she get through the airport with the weapons?
They could have driven. That would explain some of the things, like why she WOULD forget it. If you had to declare a weapon at the Airport you would definitely remember having it. But if you driven you basically pickup and go without security searching your stuff.

 What's "interesting" is watching this woman in interviews on TV and how she reacts to all of it. She's calling herself the "big bad grandma" and won't respond, on camera, when asked why she was carrying such items in general, let alone to WDW.

Andy.
I am NEVER without my knife and I use it many times a day, without fail. I used to have a carry permit for a weapon as well. If you were a "bad" person, would you attack a group of people who are all carrying guns or would you pick someone else?

acp: trust me when I say it's different in the US. Your Police don't even carry guns until the OH s*** button is pushed (or did that change)

I agree with acp here. Would people really stab or shoot someone - even in self defense? Maybe I've been living in a sheltered area from all this human hostility, but I don't really feel that my daily routines put me at risk in a situation where I would need a gun or knife. Besides the fact that I would never use either. Even the thought of using a gun gives me a guilty conscience.

The Disney abduction is just the latest in several recent attacks in the tourist area.
Last month, two armed robbers attacked a German couple staying at a motel on International Drive. One of those victims was sexually assaulted and beaten.
That same night, a man was robbed by two men with a similar description at a hotel near Universal.
Then on May 30, two Orange County deputies were shot after they interrupted a car burglary in progress at the Caribe Royale Resort near Disney. Three suspects in that case are now in custody.

Our attention is focused here at the Walt Disney World Resort deluxe hotel, the BoardWalk Inn, which we now understand has been sealed off and evacuated. Disney World spokesman Bill Warren said it is his understanding this is a domestic dispute. Asked to elaborate, he says: "We are told it's somehow related to a dispute between husband and wife."
A man is in one of the rooms of the hotel claiming to be heavily armed and holding a hotel food-service worker hostage -- also a small child. SWAT teams from the Orange County Sheriff's Department and emergency medical teams are in the area trying to resolve this situation. This is in Lake Buena Vista

Note that those things didn't happen in areas that you have to pay a lot of money to get into, that are extensively video-taped, and perhaps most importantly were not in a confined area in which the exits are tightly controlled.

Conditions at Disney parks just aren't right for these campus and mall shootings that have Americans so worried.

I agree that Orlando is not the safest town in the world and that you should always be reasonably aware of your surroundings, though.

Don't move to Philadelphia then. 380 murders and counting. everyday it gets worse and worse here. I've live here my whole life and this is one of the worst (but not THEE worst) I think it is more known right now because the National media is playing it up to be some sort of "City Under Fire"CBS, "City Under Siege"NBC. Too many guns on the street here and it is incredibly easy to get one too. Three day waiting my butt, I can still go into a gun shop and buy 10 guns in a month at that rate.

Our current totals:
http://www.nbc10.com/safercity/13405221/detail.html

It's sad how people are even proud of our murder rate.

I have had weapons around all my life. They are a part my daily life. I put one within reach, then just don't give them a second thought till needed. I don't dwell on it being there, so I tend to forget it is there. Kinda like putt'n you wallet in your desk while at work, you know it's there, but you forget it every now and then. You may even go home with out it. I am not trying to be a smart a.., just trying to explain my logic. Like I said the lady could be a loon or maybe just forgetfull.
Your right we can't really say what mental condition this woman is in. If she were in Britain she would be absolutely and categorically a loon.
But in the US she may just be carrying a gun to protect herself from everyone else who is carrying a gun to protect themselves from .....kinda circular huh.
I’m afraid I don't get the gun culture thing. I hate them and am completely conscious of it every second I have one. The sooner I can get it away from me the better. I don't comprehend how you can be comfortable with them.

this statement kinda reminds me of a joke I saw once -
Far out in deep space, two alien life forms were talking. The first said, "The dominant life forms on the Earth planet have developed nuclear weapons." The second alien asked, "Are they an emerging intelligence?" The first alien said, "I don't think so. They have them aimed at themselves!"

I like to recall a story I once heard about A Fish Called Wanda. In one scene, Kevin Kline pulls a gun in a situation in which it clearly isn't called for.

American audiences didn't respond to the action, being desensitized to gunplay for years. British audiences laughed heartily at the inappropriate appearance of a gun.

whoah, whoah, whoah... is there particular regions in the US where guns are, well, "the norm"?

I guess this is a cultural revelation for me, I never realized the US was stereotyped as being the nation where everyone has a gun. Around here guns are pretty taboo also. Some people have them in their houses around here, but that's where they remain, collecting dust. In other words, if you own a gun around here and carry it with you, you're the criminal.

A few of you are warning not to go around unprotected in your cities, but it's just the opposite here. Here it wouldn't be wise to be the one carrying the gun.

It's funny that you metion that, I remember hearing a joke about how the only reason we have the right to bear firearms was to protect ourselves from the British during the Revolution and that it really shouldn't apply today.

Many a true word is spoken in jest Cheshire C. I'm afraid that your gun laws probably are because of the Brits. I think you have the right to bear arms in case we re-invade our colony. :) Nice to know your nation is still afaraid we might still do it.

Grandmothers taking handguns and sissors into WDW for the last ditch defence of Cinerellas castle. Probably not necessary.
