Question about "Cast Only" area in Haunted Mansion

Post by AMartin777 » Oct Fri 28, 2005 7:57 am

Can anyone enlighten me on a set decoration I saw as I exited the HM. A CM entered the "Cast Only" door just outside the exit to the ride and as I walked by, I noticed a board mounted on the wall with keys. Each was labeled... can somebody fill me in on this prop? I have hardly ever heard any speak about it. Thanks! :D

if it's a "Cast Only" area and the board of keys is behind that door, my guess is it's not a prop. They're probably keys to open various service areas within the attraction. that'd be my guess anyways...

Well, the keys were the old fashion type (scrollwork at the top and simple cuts at the bottom). They weren't modern at all. It looked very much like a decorative prop.

I'd bet they are a decorative prop. Some of the entrance/exit areas are themed just inside the doorway so that a Guest can 'continue' the experience if a CM has to enter and exit the area. It would kinda kill the mood to see a glaring green hallway with florescent lighting, for instance. :D Would be fun to explore though! :D

I have been in that hall when I had a broken foot and was using an ECV the castmember led me into the attraction that way it bypasses the strech room and goes direct to the doombuggy loading area. I can't recall if it had another door to a castmember only area inside the hall.

ok, i had to use that area all the time taking out the trash. There are keys there for the help staff of the mansion and everyone thatlives there...Master Gracy's keys are missing because as the storyline goes he went out one night and never came back.

dwellsbct has it correct. I have been in that hallway, too, for the same reason. Mickeymac has a good point, too. Since CMs can be seen using the door, the area that a guest might see must be themed. Thank you, imagineers, for thinking of these things. But, even though I know about this hallway, I prefer to believe that the keys belong to the mansion residents.

On the Keys to the Kingdom tour you'll go down this hall if the HM is selected as the attraction to ride, but it doesn't bypass the stretch room, rather it bypasses the entire queue and puts you into the area just outside of the stretch room with Master Gracey's portrait (usually before any other guests have entered from the main queue). I've also been down it with my grandmother who was in an ECV, but could transfer to walking. It's pretty cool to go behind the scenes a bit but still have a somewhat immersive experience.

I remember going through there a number of times when I was small and terrified of that stupid portrait and wouldn't go any further (but to flee the attraction, rather than get on the doombuggies). Ahh memories.

Like AKLRULZ said that is also the handicap entrance for the ride. They have you enter the exit queue and make a left after the tombs.

From there you transfer into a doom buggies.

Though.. this might have changes with the new rehab. Heard they expanded the queue to handle wheel chairs and ECVs

But I do remember seeing those keys. I love the insane amount of detail Disney puts in to each and every ride.... tip of the hat to the imagineers!

I found the room in question in this video:

It looks as if Disney is now using the hallway as a way for select guests to bypass the... outdoor queue (?).
