WDW CM's to Vote Today (6/6/07)

Today is another cast member voting day on the proposed contract for CM's in the WDW resort.

Supposedly Disney presented the same contract that was voted down during the last vote. Another "no" vote sets up the opportunity for a CM strike, should they choose to do so.

It will be interesting to see the results come in over the next few days.

(ADMIN: This thread presents risk for a breakdown into pro/con union debate, I debated even posting the Info. for that reason but the information is useful, especially for those of us traveling to Disney in the next months. If it does, please lock/delete)

Question for CM's. When i heard that Employee's of Disney are called Cast Members because they view the place as a show, being in insurance the first thing i thought of was how brilliant! if they are a part of the show they don't have to offer health insurance because technically they are not full time employee's. They could re-cast thus uloading people that they just deem annoying..laugh. anyways you get what i'm saying...i'm hoping i'm wrong.

Guest facing changes you will see:

1) DDP will no longer include the gratuity (but price will remain the same)
2) DDE will have an automatic 18% gratuity added
3) Groups of 6 will now have to pay an 18% gratuity (instead of 8 as it is today)

3 is likely the most significant to a majority of guests. #1 is probably a trade-off. Either the price would have gone up or they hold the price and remove the gratuity.
#2 probably has the least impact of all based on population utilizing.

Not trying to start a DDP debate, just more information on the new deal.

Never use either dining plan so it won't affect me at all. And besides I tip 25-35% when I'm at the parks, because I know someone is living off of that money and I would just use it to buy something stupid like a hat or shirt or something (which I have plenty of to begin with). Speaking of automatic tipping, I hate it. It has been my experience that 70% of the time you get a ton more in tips if you let the group decide there own. Generally close to 20% which is way better than the 8% that it is now. I'm glad to see that the CM's will make a little more with that 18%.

DR. RAVENSCROFT! you are so very right. I have worked in restaurants where the added automatic gratuity didn't even go to the servers. We were just paid 9 an hour..... could be good and bad :-/

automatic gratuity and set wages are the worst thing Disney could do. Making people "earn" their wages through tipping is one thing that keeps everyone on the staff performing their roles with Disney Spirit.

2) well that means the server is going to get about 2% less, since I normally just put the bill back up to what it original was pre DDE.
3) If you have to 18% then it's not a gratuity. When the tip/gratuity is precalculated you don't have to pay only the total of the bill.

The question is, IS that legal? I don't think it is. I learned an interesting fact that mandatory tip pooling is also not legal. I listened to a discussion/presentation about the whole minimum wage/tip issue at work. In Minnesota, servers are not exempt from minimum wage law, so restaurants lobby pretty hard about getting that changed. Someone brought up tip pooling and the speaker said it wasn't legal to make it mandatory.

I suspect that mandatory tip pooling not being legal is state/local law. Last I knew it wasn't illegal in Vegas/NV, it's been a few years since I've been to Vegas but the practice is quite prevalent (I've known both a dealer and wait-staff in vegas.)

In addition those I've known in Vegas like it. Because the are pooled across either a day, or a week. And so it doesn't matter if you get a prime shift or way off prime shift, everyone gets the same tip per hour.
