Walt Disney World was literally out in the sticks. We had a hard time finding the place. The only thing open was the Magic Kingdom and it wasn’t completed. I remember that Tomorrowland still had a lot of work going on. At the end of the day we took a Monorail Ride and got off at the Polynesian Resort. I remember walking in and looking down at the atrium in the Grand Ceremonial House. Walking out to the pool I was totally in awe. Growing up in a small town I had never seen anything like this before. I asked my Dad if we could stay there and he said he would check out the price of a room. As I remember it was like $38 dollars a night way too much money for us to spend on our Budget. I vowed that someday I will stay there. The Year was 1984 my wife and I had taken the plunge we were on our way to the Polynesian. I can remember that trip like it was yesterday. We took a night flight from Reno Nevada arriving at the Poly early in the morning, checking in and walking upstairs to look down at the atrium just like my father and I did when I was 17. Four More trips came later so the Polynesian is my Favorite.

Wow ~ what cool memories! I wish I could remember more about my first trip to WDW. I know there was only the MK as it was 1976, and we likely only went for the day, but I really don't remember any of the trip

That's because you were what, 6 months old?
I love your memory of the Poly, SearlProudbottom! My family and I stayed there in 1980 and had a great time. I posted some photos somewhere... the "Anything Else" thread, I think, where we put all of our old stuff we found. At any rate, I still love the idea of staying at the Poly, but other places, like Boardwalk or Beach Yacht Club, have us a little more intrigued.

Bless your heart cy1229, you are so sweet! I was 6
years old, but that still isn't old enough to retain anything evidently ~ just call me Dory

I remember your photos cy, those were great! I will have to scan our few photos in one of these days. We only have a few, the two I can remember are my oldest brother and me with Captain Hook, and me with Snow White ~ she was sooooo pretty

Fun! Well, the pictures will be fun to see, not the scanning process...

Quick report on my stay at Port Orleans Riverside. Of the 6 WDW resorts I've stayed at, POR comes in #1 for the grown-up me. Kid me will always and forever love Fort Wilderness.
I have a bunch of pictures of my renovated alligator bayou room to post in my official trip report thread (which doesn't exist yet). It was thoroughly charming. The walk to the west depot was about the same as to the main depot. For the mornings I hit west depot and had a pretty minor wait. In the evenings I hopped off at the main depot with my trusty mug in hand to fill it 3/4 full of lemonade then off to Muddy Rivers for a shot of rum to make the lemonade palatable.
Next trip, if I'm not using my Hilton timeshare, I think I wanna go back to POR unless I've hit some crazy miraculous money jackpot, then I'm off to the Grand Floridian or the Animal Kingdom lodges...

We can dream can't we!? I've always thought POR looked like a really fun place to stay...but like you I have my dreams, and if the Poly really does end up being part of the DVC, and I won a lottery of some sort, well....I'm all over that like white on rice

DW and I honeymooned at POR...and absolutely loved it! We stayed in one of the Manors along the Sassagoula River...and were just a short 6-7 minute walk to the Main Depot. I think if we stayed in a non-DVC resort again...it would be POR. One of my best friends took his family down to WDW last fall and they stayed in one of the renovated Alligator Bayou rooms...and his 3 little girls loved it.
Of the Moderate Resorts I have stayed at (POFQ, POR, and Coronado) POR is my favorite.
