Monorail Expansion
I read maybe about a year ago, if Disney could get Florida to build the substations, Disney would run a monorail from the airport to Disney, with stops at those sub stations. Don't ask where i read it, cause I don't remember.

That is high speed rail, not monorail. A part of a larger Florida rail project that Jeb and friends are still trying to derail... Disney said they'll pay for part of the line from the airport to WDW if it is direct express [no stops] to the parks rather than stopping along the way. Right now the project is in limbo from the sounds of it...

That project came up for vote as a referrendum when I lived in Orlando. It was voted down, mainly because people didn't want to see a tax increase to pay for it. I always thought it was a great idea--reduce traffic and polution while providing a fast, safe way to get to Lake Buena Vista. There was also a lot of pressure from local businesses to vote down the idea. The taxi and shuttle companies in particular raised a big stink.

I thinkk that the monorail is a good idea, but not plausable. teh busses do a good enough job for right now, not to mention the fact that what if they continue to add several new resorts every few years. Thats going to be alot of expansion work required. I'd rather see Disney invest their/our money into something better because the current transportation system seems to be working out just fine.

So true. And just something to add about the buses, the majority of their fleet is aging fast and was already used when bought. So the replacement cost of all of those won't be cheap... Still, I'm afraid that will come sooner than plans for new monorail lines. As a railway engineer [both the civil engineering and soon to start training for actual train operations] I can say it is certainly feasible and if done right it could be made to incorperate future plans. But that takes time and money plus some vision, something management isn't specializing in handing out right about now it seems...GoofyInOhio wrote:I think it would be worth it for them to add it in. There is just something special about going from the Magic Kingdom to Epcot on a Monorail. I think they should have the Monorails all over. You can ride a bus anywhere, but you can't use a monorail just anywhere.

To me, the monorail is quintessential Walt Disney World. When I go there, I take pictures of the monorail from every different angle, trying to get the perfect picture of it. It drives my wife nuts. I love to ride it, and I love to look at it. Even though there are more sophistocated monorail systems elsewhere (airports, Las Vegas, etc.), the monorail at Disney World is still the coolest. I think they should spend the money to expand the monorail... right to my front door.GoofyInOhio wrote:something special about going from the Magic Kingdom to Epcot on a Monorail.

I've heard this a million times. It'll never happen. Even back in 1980 when they were constructing the track, it was $1 million per mile. And you also have to add monorail stations, monorail cars, power to run it, and I bet that today constructing more track beams would be even more money. I'd put it at about $365 million to do both the Disney-MGM Studios and Animal Kingdom.
