What a fun topic.
I was intimidated at first and wouldn't trade. Then, curiosity got the better of me and now it's one of my favorite things to do. Pin trade, snack, people watch, it's all good.
Cast Members are usually nice. In the ancient times I did encounter CMs who would refuse to accept pins with metal backs because it would snag thier ties or blouses, but these days most pins have rubber Mickey backs.
I have traded for "secret" pins, sometimes it's a treat, other times I just retraded it on the next trade.
I avoid the professional pin traders. They seem less into it for fun, and ONCE, when I was hoping to find a HM pin to take home to my son, and I traded with a "pro" he told me to go buy two LE pins (Nurses Day pins, I still remember) and he would trade with me for the HM...and I did. I know now that he was taking advantage of me, but I didn't know then.
So, buy a little box of pins (they are often the most reasonable) and get bitten by the pin bug!
Oh, and you don't have to WEAR the lanyard, you can keep your traders in a little coin purse or ziploc baggie if you want.

Pin Sharks... UGH!!! When I worked in Tomorrowland, I had one of those guys trade a non-Disney pin (Brickyard 400) for a LE pin. I gave him the pin he wanted and shoved his pin in my hand upsidedown and closed my hand and speed-walked away. I threw the pin out because I wasn't about to put a crappy racing pin on the lanyard. I hate those kinds of people.kcookiebaker wrote:I avoid the professional pin traders. Tip: They are almost always outside the pin trading shopin DTD Marketplace.

Weirdness is compatible with ours,
We join up with them and fall in
Mutual weirdness and call it Love.”

At SSR, we would trade ours among ourselves to have a themed lanyard. My best friend who worked with me did his in all Mickey, and one of my managers had all Chip and Dale. Our managers also would let us keep a particular pin we liked if we asked.... how I got a couple of my favorites.MadEye wrote:No. CMs do not own the pins and should not tell or try to get the guests to trade a better pin. The guest should be able to trade whatever pin they want, regardless of what the CM(s) want them to trade.Mr.ToadWildRider wrote:Two questions from a non-trader:
1) Do the CMs actually own the pins? My assumption is no, because don't they like HAVE to trade you if you ask?
2) Going off the above question a bit do CMs ever try to get people to trade higher rarity (presumably therefore higher value?) pins for more common/less valuable pins? I feel like the system seems scary for someone just entering. You see all the guests with their pins out for trading at various places in the World. DTD a lot it seemed. I always felt like that seemed so predatory, but those are private individuals; I'm asking about the CMs.
On the flip side, When I worked at the Great Movie Ride, if the pins on the lanyards where crap, I would ususally go to the managers office and switch out for some good pins for the guests.
I did the blind trade with a few guests (mainly kids). They enjoyed seeing which surprise pin they would get.
