I'd say it's a money grab, but considering how crazy racist north OC can get, it might still be true.

I need someone to clarify something for me.
Granted, I'm white, live in middle America in the Midwest, have an education, and haven't ever had someone treat me poorly based on factors that I couldn't control.
Ok there's that one time when I was 8 or 9 a girl down my street didn't like the fact that my nose was running on a winter day, and was mean to me, but that's just stupid kidstuff.
Anyway, I don't understand how when an employee of a restaurant, theme park, or other place in the public is rude to someone that's not African American, we call it being rude, impolite, unprofessional, etc. But when the same act of rudeness occurs against an African American, it's racism.
Can anyone help me understand this distinction? The whole notion seems racist to me.

Just because you don't want it to be a racially based issue doesn't mean it wasn't. For all we know, the worker thought "Oh great here comes a bunch of n***ers...". Obviously, this is not the corporate mantra of disney, but he was working as a representative of said corporation.

Maybe we need a beer summit or a Tea Party?

No, I know that... but there is a certain degree of truth in what I say. The CM wearing the rabbit costume might be a completely moronic buffoon with antiquated, unenlightened perspectives about race. But that doesn't change that racism is the first thing that is stated.

Because they are an industry in their death throes and now bloggers are the dominant force and do not have to follow the guidelines.

I personally do agree with the idea that this could be getting towards a $$$ seeking pattern. I personally could say the same thing in that the princesses at the front of Disneyland ignored me in favor of younger girls. Unfortunately I think the ultimate outcome of this is going to be less free roaming characters at Disneyland. That truly is a shame as it was a small thing I really enjoyed a lot. In WDW, except at a restaurant, the character stays in one location and there is always a handler with the character. Granted if Chip and Dale are together than it would be one handler for the two characters. In Disneyland I did notice characters around without handlers or too few handlers for the amount of characters in an area.

I don't think they free roam for the most part, partially for the worker's saftey and also to prevent crowds from blocking walkways.

Definitely a lot more relaxed with the characters in Disenyland if they are not free roaming. Characters seemed like they had more freedom to move and were able to get away with more than in WDW. Free roaming I did see in the entrance to Disneyland and I think it mostly occurred with talking characters.

That isn't actually free roaming, that is one of the spots they use.

Free roaming in terms that they move around the area meeting people and don't have a set line. Secondly they didn't have a handler standing right on top of them like you normally see in WDW.
