Star Tours is indeed ready for an overhaul..... Pee Wee doing Rex has gotten old and stale. And CGI has gotten so much better. But they better not include Jar Jar Binks in any new ride or attraction.

Gosh, I hope they're finally doing something with this. I have a bumper sticker from back in 2001 that promises a "Tatooine Express" overhaul that never came to fruition. I do find it incredibly ironic that George Lucas, the man who insisted on exacting technical specifications for the theaters that were to air his second trilogy, would allow Star Tours (which is seen by hundreds of thousands of people around the world each day to decay to the state it has (seriously, the DL prints are god-awful).

I just read this on the LA Times ( link from Dr Ravenscroft so he gets the credit )
Our source reveals that the revamp will incorporate prequel characters (like Naboo citizens and Geonosians) along with many aliens from the original trilogy (Aqualish. Bith, Rodians, etc). In the action sequence, the Star Tours vehicle is now going to be chased by Boba Fett. C3PO and R2-D2 are still the hosts, and Anthony Daniels will be recording his parts this week. Admiral Ackbar holographically communicates with the Star Tours vehicle. Right now they’re shooting mostly green screen footage, as it is the middle part of the production timeline.
There are also rumors of some 3D action. ST soooo needs and update, lets hope its soon and both parks.

Well I got it from someone else on Twitter so I can't claim the credit either (@DLToday posted it). I am on the fence with this story. I love that they are updating it, BUT I am scared that they will add too many "new" characters that few Star Wars fans enjoy. I like the fact that the ride immerses you in the world of Stars Wars from the perspective of a regular citizen. You don't need tons of famous characters to make the ride great, if you add more characters I fear you diminish the experience.

I'm with you...it makes me nervous though lord knows it needs an update. Given George Lucas's last couple of Star Wars epics....we have to hope he can put it altogether in a cohesive fashion. I fell asleep on the last two Star Wars movies.

Part of me hopes that this is true since I kind of refuse to ride the ride because I'm sick of the same thing over and over again. I'll be looking forward to this.

I would appreciate some variants, maybe an A, B and C version so that the ride would be different each time.
No one's gloomy or complaining while the flatware's entertaining.

I love Star Tours, but I must admit it's gotten a little stale. I'd love to see them do an update on it. I think the screen changes would be great. Thanks for posting the article, I never realized that we went past the microscope from Adventures Through Inner Space which is one of my favorite rides of yore. I'll have to look for it the next time I make it to Disneyland.

Yep, you do see the mighty microscope...and I also believe that I read somewhere the mechanism in the queue area that carries the baskets with various "droid parts" through the droid rooms is also part of the mighty microscope.

Near the start of the ride, after the ship makes a wrong turn and drops down into a storage area filled with junk, but just before blasting into space, the microscope can be seen in the film, near the bottom-right corner of the screen.
There is a story that Lucasfilm reshot this sequence because the microscope was way too obvious in their first pass and stood out like a sore thumb. Last but not least, one of the droid parts baskets is supposed to be carrying one of the minaturized atom mobiles from the original microscope tube.

I didn't know that.

I could completely go along with this type of revamp, but to just re-do it for the sake of "updating" is kinda scary. We know what can happen if there is a bad re-do.

(not a big fan of the prequels)

I like the idea of variants. It would really make a big difference.
